The 13th Floor Elevators - She Lives (In A Time Of Her Own) - LULU - 6-:16 -0-09-20

X-No-Archive: yes

Here's a tune from the Elevators' second album, "Easter Everywhere,"
released in 1967. It's an interesting piece of early psychedelia.
These Texas legends were destined for a shortened and erratic career.
It's hard to be an acid fueled band, during an era in Texas, when a
single joint could get you a life sentence in the DOC. Legal and drug
problems and Roky Erickson's eventual mental breakdown hastened the
end of what could have been. The Elevators' influence on other
musicians and later bands is undeniable. The "electric" jug is an
interesting element of the band's sound. Kind of like a whirly-bird
ghost under a lysergic spell.

Enjoy,
Lulu : )

Excellent bio of Roky Erickson...

He definitaly got the shitty end of the stick for awhile & survived.

Cool stuff.

The parallels with Syd Barrett are of course, obvious. I didn't realize
that the "acid casualty" label that follows Roky around was really
"acid + Mom casualty" until I watched that doco...

Good to see he's out of his shell a bit and making some music. Too
bad that nobody was able to do the same for Syd.

He is doing a lot better these days. He still plays at Antone's
occasionally. Around ten years ago he was notorious for scheduling
performances and then not show up. My favorite song of his is "Starry
Eyes" which has a 50's love song-style melody matched to his classic voice.

He's got a new song... "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a
frontal lobotomy".

Great article.

Nice to read that the brothers have patched things up with Mom and
that they are doing some good things.

I'm gonna try and track down a copy of "24 Melodious Etudes for Tuba"...
