new song up - "Oh No! Not Blues Again!" - Daniel Dreibelbis - 6-:16 -0-09-20

seems like every time I get a new plug-in, guitar, or other forms of
G.A.S. and want to put it through its paces, I wind up recoding a
bluesy jam.

But this one was a little different, for U wasn't out to base it on
guitar! No, because as well as being a frustrated drummer, I'm also a
frustrated organist - and as luck would have it, I got ahold of one of
the best organ VSTs there is.

(The love of B3 organ comes from two bands I played in back in the 80s
which had killer organ/Leslie players - when you have one of those bad
boys comping behind you, you don't need a second guitar!)

I don't know what was tougher with this one, though - playing the organ
itself, or the mixdown afterwards. As I learned after many, many hours
of getting levels right, organs and distortion guitar don't play well
with each other, and you have to work with getting the >right< amount
of grit on guitar to make it stand out in a mix.

Still, I think I did OK with this little Texas Twister. As always,
thoughts on how I did are much appreciated!

rhythm guitar - Peavey Falcon though Studio Devil BVC (great freeware app!)
lead guitar - Fender Highway 1 Strat through Amplitube Jimi Hendrix
bass - Peavey Millenium through NI Guitar Rig 3
organ - NI B4II
drums: Terry Bozzio (via Submersible Music Drumcore 2)

I think the mix is good. I think the organ should be more distorted
and swirly though, but that's my taste. Now let's see you mix it with
vocals!

I didn't realize the guitar was a software amp (even though you
mention it the first sentence) till I read the bottom afterwards.
That's pretty good. I never seem to like playing though the software
amps or Pods.

Why does Year of the Anggry Rabbit have a Parental Advisory? I tried
to load it, but it comes up with a "loading error". Same on a couple
other songs. You might want to check it. I heard it on your myspcae
page and think it's your best song from the ones I heard. Seems like
you play a lot of different types.

for the rhythm, the Studio Devil BVC was quite amazing - and it's
quite simple to boot, the interface is basically knobs. The fact that
it's free is even more amazing (it acts as advertising for their
commercial plugs, more elaborate guitar and bass amp plugs).

sometimes it's a bit frustrating using plugs, as they often have their
own sound associated with them. None do a real convincing AC30 tone,
the Amplitube stuff does the most convincing Fender, while Native
Instruments' plugs do the best hi-gain (and Guitar Rig 3 has a nice
HiWatt emulation). But the ability to reamp, as in mix and match, is
quite nice.

for violent imagery, and for using the word "pussy" and not meaning a cat :)

thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you like them!

Re: new song up - "Oh No! Not Blues Again!" - Wonton Studios - 6-:17 -0-09-20

I liked it, Daniel... cool bass! Recording sounded very nice. Nice
organ tones in back..nice spread in stereo. That bass is crazy..like
it. Drums? Where are those from? Sounds like a backing from some
catalog? Solois cool..sounded like ZZ Top way it came in. Like the
placement in stereo field.. nice watery tone in solo guitar. From 2:22
to 2:37 sounded like it was a little too much playing over that....
less notes, and then build to the crescendo you did anyway. Nice
jamming at end...lot going on. That bass is cool... holding it down
for sure. Ending has nice ringing tones on it...like the ending
playing from 4:06 to 4:18...damn drums cut offf too soon. So instead
maybe add back end of drums if you can do that, or cut it at 4:17, and
fade out from 4:00-4:17 or something? That wouldnt sound as good if
you could add back the drums instead...so everything plus a drum bass
kick beat and crash to end it all, to go with your lone guitar note at
end which hangs in space weirdly in my ear.

Really cool song..nice job...recorded well.. you were playing your ass
off on that bass, guitars were cool and rhythm was cool
strumming..solos were a little too note-laiden... maybe take your time
with them a little more and dont be afraid to milk some notes
more...shows you put a lot of effort into it, and you made a damn nice
rocking blues tune all by yourself... impressive if anyone can do
this... kick ass, Daniel.

Peace,
Jason

Random thoughts...

I would've brought the lead guitar riff up in the mix. Nice entrance
to it in any event.

The Bass playing is very, very good. It seems to be a strength of
yours.

Organ was layered in juuust right. Nice shimmer to it w/o being
overpowering.

Drums - Maybe a little more dynamic change throughout the song? It
seemed static to me. (This crisicism coming from a guy that has NO
BUSINESS trying to play those things, so, good on ya for the
effort. :-)

Loved the tone of the Falcon. Sets the mood for the song very well.

Nice job and thanks for posting it, Daniel!

well it kinda reminds me of SRV's song "Pride and Joy" but with
a sort of Duane Eddy (ish) type guitar sound (sans the super twang).

I liked it. Seems like a nice backing track or the rhythm
section is all set up for vocals to come to the party.
I also like how everything sat in the mix with each instrument
not trying to outdo the other sonically/tonally.. etc.

It would be cool to hear a lead guitar cut out or pop out
and sit on top of that rhythm mix. Use it in lieu of vocals.
Make it scream. Humbucker or heavy P-90 type thing.
Kinda like it is the 'guest' modern lead guitar come to play with the
bluesy rhythm boys from down home.

I liked it. And I also like a lot of Frank Zappa stuff
and Terry Bozzio played with Zappa. cool.

thanks for sharing! you do a lot of cool stuff.

that's the Peavey Millennium, I picked it up used for $149. Has a
great neck and a basswood body, so it's quite light! I did do some mods
to it, like installing a pair of Duncan Jazz Classic Stacks and a
different bridge so I could drop the action just right

actually, it's from a very cool plug-in prgram from Submersible Music
called Drumcore, which acts as a sample library for drum and MIDI
loops, and allows for drag and drop of files into your favorite DAW.
The deluxe version of the program includes complete and sampler
libraries recorded by professional drummers, including Alan White, Matt
Sorum, Sly Dunbar, Zoro, Terry Bozzio, and John Tempesta, amongst
others (plus you can buy additional content from other drummers,
including Steve Gadd, Danny Gottlieb, Bill Bruford, Matt Cameron and
Bun E. Carlos). I used this shuffle collection by Bozzio that was
perfect

that's probably the toughest part, getting everything to sit in the mix
nicely - it's often too tempting to, as a guitarist, to crank up the
guitars and have everything else sound tiny and a couple miles away in
the background. Like I said, one of the nice things about plugs is you
can take your stuff like MIDI and bare audio and try a number of
different instrument or audio plugs "for size". I also take some advice
from Joe Satriani in that I'll often take a break after recording
certain parts and go do something else like a walk or other errands -
you come back to it and assess if it sounded as OK as it did when you
first recorded it, plus it's never a good idea to do final mixdown if
you've been recording for several hours in a row and suffering from ear
fatigue.

my favorite Bozzio is, of course, the stuff he did on Jeff Beck's
_Guitar Shop_. It was neat a few years ago when Jeff did the tour with
BB King and re-united the Trio with Bozzio and Tony Hymas. That was a
pleasant surprise when they came out onstage! (Still wish I had seen
them on the tour with SRV).

I've got two complete performances with Terry in Drumcore - the
shuffle performances and a 5/4 assortment. I'm thinking of getting the
two Bozzio collections in the near future.

Speaking of Bozzio, and I knew you had good taste, is this:

I still cant get over it, and I've seen it easily over 50 times.

How do they know? Does soundclick listen to and rate music? Did
someone report you? I didn't hear any vocals.
