Something to Ponder - Claude V. Lucas - 6-:15 -0-09-20

When Elvis died in '77, there were less than 90 Elvis tribute/impersonators.
32 years later there are over 230,000 world wide. It's one of the fastest
growing job markets on earth. Some expert predict that at that rate of growth,
by the year 2045 half of the worlds population will be an "Elvis Tribute/impersonator",
and the other half of the population will be doing all they can to avoid the Elvii.

I ever catch one alone I'll gut him for sport.

I was 20 that year. My father did the toxicology work on his blood. He
worked w/ Michael Badin, then the Medical Examiner for NYC. At the time,
it'd been released that Elvis died "of a heart attack". I remember my
dad telling us "you wouldn't _beleive_ what we found- [they'd used
GC/MS (Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry), then a cutting age tool
that HP had developed]. He had ingested a full-on pharmacy. I remember
laughing at the time because I was of the opinion that Elvis was a dick.
His whole visit with Nixon bit, etc. The Vietnam War was only over by
two years at that point, and to me at least, Elvis represented an old
corny poser- it really annoyed me that Scotty Moore was a name no one
knew and pretty boy got all the credit for music ripped off of Blacks.

The years have passed and I've read enough to learn that he was actually
a good, simple guy who just got swept up and into a marketing $$$
machine. Not a single person who ever worked with him has ever had
anything but kind, thoughtful things to say about a true, simple country
boy who was humble at heart and did his best to play the cards that were
dealt him in a far different America than we live in today.

But impersonators? Fuck that noise. Whadda jizzbag racket, imo. ;-) M

No shit. I live across the road from one. He sucks. Actually, I
haven't heard him 'rehearsing' with his @#%$*&^ Karaoke machine for a
month or so. Guess he went back to his day job. Truck driver, you know.

In the immortal words of Mojo Nixon:

"Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king"

Personally, I think we need Carl Perkins impersonators... or at least
ONE Chuck Berry impersonator. Why don't we have them?

Oh yeah. Honestly one of the only "impersonators" I've ever been impressed
with is this guy. http://www.davidbowietribute.com/main.html

Amazing!

Seeing Elvis on Ed Sullivan sure gave me a big hint as to what I
wanted to do. Much like Howard Hughes, he became a prisoner of his
posse in later years.

Working at one of the last Lafayette stores in the oldfartdays(.com)
things were slow, on one of the TVs was a Elvis Imp show, they
had (they claimed) 500 of them. One would enter from stage left, sing
a few lines, then another from stage right, do the same..over n over.

NONE of them even came close to looking like Elvis. Few of them even
had the singing down. IMMSMW, Dick Clark was the MC. That figures.

Later, they interviewed a few, and some stated they had operations
to make them LOOK like Elvis. I'd sue for malpractice. Libel.

We watched it on a Sanyo 19" color TV I later bought and it lasted
for many years, handed down to family members, etc. Still got a
Sanyo calc that plays music from that same era. Batteries still work!

Decade or 2 later, I was working for Digital in Franklin, MA., and a
co worker needed a ride home. No problem. Older lady, nice person.

She invites me in for coffee, but when I entered, I was freaked out.

Elvis oil paintings everywhere. Elvis plates, cups, napkins, bookends,
his flocking pix was everywhere. Seat covers, she had every LP he ever
made, and while I didn't hit the loo, I'd guess she had Elvis TP there.

I was so freaked, I just declined the coffee, saying I had to go. She
was a nice person, no one there ever had a clue. But she had Elvis Fever.

Word is, RCA records survived(still?) of the ability to keep the LP presses
going 24/7 for decades pressing Elvis records. Today, he still sells CDs,
DVDs of his sucky movies, and cheap oil paintings. Sunday, I went to a car
show in Paxton, MA. Aside was an estate sale. Elvis records for $.25.

..along with many books for learning how to speak Russian. 'Can't explain'

On a side note, at another car show in CT, years ago, my brother (BIG drag
racing freak) and I walk around, someone is selling a velvet oil painting
of Hulk Hogan. Really, never saw one before. I've met the guy, he's a jerk,
so Bro n I laugh, saying who would buy such crap. Sure enough, as we are
packing up (sold all our car stuff) we see some rube walking out with it.

I *HAD* to go ask why. Person says it as close to Elvis as she will ever get.

You have no idea how much effort it took not to puke/laugh right there.

Sucks to be a rube. But the $$$ flows because of said suck.
