Last nights gig - Mark Bedingfield - 6-:13 -0-09-20

Well. It went off. Brilliant fun, still not gigging enough to completely
relax but I played OK mostly. All the cockups were covered, which is
what I expect from a half decent band. The new Traynor scared the shit
outta the mixing guy, I boosted during sound check for a solo and he
reckons it shot up 30db, not bad for one notch on the volume control ;-)
The mixing guy did all the boosting for me and made my life a hell of
a lot easier. Which is why we use him I guess.

Did I say before that the Traynor is bloody awesome? I had it on 2 and a
half clean and could easily here myself over miced drums. And it sounded
oh so sweeeeeet. With the Muff on "Are you gonna go my way" it just had
an awesome classic tone. All in all, it was exactly what I was looking for.

Anywho, there were about 100 to 150 people, mostly friends of the band
families, which is always a tough audience. We cranked and really had a
ball, the crowd was dancing around generally going mental. I'd rate us
at about 6-7/10 over all, the missus reckons 9. Who ya gonna believe?

I'm off this arvo to get some video of it, so we'll see now the
adrenaline has worn off and everyone is sober.

Heres the song list;

April sun in Cuba
Are you gonna go my way
Like Wow, Wipeout
What I like about you
Rocking all over the world
Hard Days night
Pretty Vegas
Holy Grail
Chasing Cars
Tainted Love
Cherry, cherry
Brown Sugar
Sex on fire
Video killed the radio star
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Do you see what I see
Break up song
Hands open
What's my Scene
Kryptonite
No Secrets
On my mind
Bad case of loving you
Most people I know
We've gotta get out of this place (Angels version)

Cheers

Mark

That's a pretty varied set list, I'm sure it kept everyone on their
toes. Sounds like a lot of fun. I haven't really gigged in so many
years it's not even funny...but I am starting to get the itch again.
One of these days.

I was also suprised at the set list - video killed the radio star to
brown sugar to hard day's night to are you gonna go my way. I wouldn't
have been expecting that, but I like most of those songs......
interesting :)

I always have trouble with band members when creating a set list because
my musical tastes are so varied. But I am flexible and do my best to make it
enjoyable for everyone. But I want to have "some" input. I play songs I
don't like because the majority does like them. And I do my best to be
professional.
But speaking of Mark's set list. One of the reasons I re-quit my re-united
band was the two brothers (that are like one person) tried to make me feel
like a piece of gay dog shit because I like "Video killed the radio star". I
did not even suggest it, just mentioned off hand I liked the song when
another group member said the name in talking about the history of Mtv. They
both looked at me like I just asked everyone to fuck me in the ass. Then
started their usual time tested ration of shit. The other guys didn't like
the song either but none of them tried to destroy me over it.
Those two did the exact same thing when I said I wanted to sing "Cruel to
be kind" by Nick Lowe. But funny thing, in the midst of their diatribe, the
bass player spoke up and said he really liked the song. The bro's stood
there like they had just been punched in the nose. We wound up doing the
song. But to be honest I could never enjoy myself because I knew what they
were really thinking. Plus the lead would never learn the lead break, he
just sloughed through it and acted like it was all too beneath him.
So they don't like the song, they don't have to piledrive someone for it.
I've never criticized the shit they like that I don't like. But boy, they
never missed a chance to dump on me.
Anyway, all this quickly rekindled those old feelings of why the band broke
up with in the first place. They have this "attitude" and if you don't fit
their mold, you're a fag. These guys are one, over 50, the other almost 50.
You'd think they might have grown up just a bit in the 20 years since we
played together. And to top it all off, they both parade around as Born
Again Christians. Maybe they did find Jesus, be he still has some work to do
on those two.

Still waiting for clips ;-)

Good to hear you had fun. I wouldn't nitpick too much after you watch
the vids...it's hard to re-create the high when you're away from the
action. It always sounds perfect when you're in the middle of it :-)
Good list, nothing wrong with throwing some Lenny in there.

congrats on having fun at the gig.
Yep - a nice rig makes for a good time playing.
Cool set list. I haven't heard of a lot of those
but that gives me something new to listen to.
We also play Are U Gonna Go My Way along with Where are we running (L.Kravitz)
and I too use a Fuzz for those songs. Lots of fun. (I also kick on
a flanger or phaser for the background swirling fuzz rhythm since I don't do
the lead for Are U Gonna Go My Way. I do the lead on Where are we running.
It's a nice short lead that packs a punch though. (typical Kravitz - good stuff)

Hmm.. we also do Brown Sugar and some other stones stuff.
We do pocket full of Kryptonite, Bad Case of Loving You (some other
Rober Palmer stuff but recently those are off the set lists).
What I Like About You (I think every club/party set list has this on it).
Great song. simple and cool.

I have heard Video Killed the Radio Star and I can't even imagine
how you guys play that live. Weird song but very cool pop weird. I like it.

The rest I have never heard of so I'll go a-searching for them.
I think I've heard We've gotta get out of this place but I think it's
a 50's or 60's song <????>

Ah well. Sounds like you are really grooving with the Traynor.
And you even like the OEM Celestion in there so it's a turn key amp.
Just plug in and you're happy. That really is great news.
Sounds like the honeymoon with that amp will last longer that
you even expected. Maybe that's the one for a lifetime keeper.

40 watts of great whoop ass tones. Doesn't get much better than that.
In fact it doesn't get any better. cool.

You know something, when you really enjoy playing you always
tend to gig more and more and get out there. Have fun!

I've got a pretty rockin' version by the Lemonheads.
