webstrings? - jtees4 - 09:53 03-12-08

I know this has been discussed in the past, but I am planning on
buying a ton of strings from webstrings.com soon (electric, acoustic,
and bass). Is there any reason I should not buy from them AND/OR is
there a better more resonable place to buy from. I am not picky with
electric strings...in fact I have been using the Rogue bulk strings
recently and they have been fine. I'm just not as picky as I'm getting
older.
Thanks.

I've been using WebStrings on all of my electrics for the past couple
of years and I love them. My only complaint is that the strings come
packed two to an envelope, which isn't so bad, but there is always one
pair per set that has both strings wrapped together which is a pain in
the ass. Other than that, be mindful that when going for quantity
discounts that you can't mix most types of strings. From their FAQ:

Q: Can I mix bass strings with guitar strings to achieve a volume
discount?
A: Sorry but our order page cannot do this. As a rule you can mix
anything with an identical price.

I was looking online a few minutes ago, and someone posted (don't
remember where) that their new order came with the strings
individually wrapped where they used to come two per as you
stated...so maybe they had a lot of complaints and finally changed
this. I could see where that would be annoying.

A little annoying but I appreciated that they were using half as much
paper in their packaging by shipping them two per envelope. The
annoying part was the one pair per set that were wrapped together.

Never any problems - but sometimes they run out of certain guages - and
don't answer emails about when they'll be back :)

I've had sets of their strings on guitars I do a YEAR of hard gigs with...
NO issues with the 'Product'...

I've been treated well by the folks at stringsandbeyond.com.

Their prices were best for the strings that I use...

Some other companies have started doing this. I just strung up my
girlfriends acoustic with Dean Markleys?? and I had to separate the
strings.

What KILLS me is that they don't do them like 6-5 4-3 2-1 - they do them
6-1 5-2 3-4 - so, when you're putting them on (in order) you have to put
one aside...

I think the reason for that is so that you don't have to figure out
which is the E and which is the B string. Sounds easy enough to
determine until you're trying to change a string in low lighting after
a few beers.

Electric guitar strings: I swear by GHS Nickel Rocker 10's. Wherever I
can find them. Obvious tone considerations notwithstanding, they've
got a silky feel like no other string I've ever played. :-) mvm

Missed the original post, hope I'm quoting the original person.

I have only been playing 3.5 years, and I'm still in the "try as many brands
as possible until you find the right one, then stick with it" phase.

I'm not picky about strings on my electrics, and the webstrings that I have
used on them have all been very adaquate.

The classical strings are very generic, but they sound find.

I was not impressed with their acoustic steel strings. The top three
strings consistantly came with discolorations along the strings, and while I
don't know if it affected the tone, it affected my playing. I'm one of
those people who is easily distracted, and the spots on the strings
distracted me when I was playing. I'm a fingerstyle player.

On my guitars, I currently have:

Classical: D'Adarrio Pro Arte, high tension
Steel string acoustic: John Pearse, lights (too jingly for me, so I will
try another brand in a few weeks - So far, my favorite is Thomastek Enfield
80/20 Lights)
Electrics: Mostly D'Adarrios, plain old medium guage strings. Not fond
of the lime green Slinkys, have about 5 different brands to try out as I
start changing strings.

I'm mostly focusing on classical guitar and Xmas music right now, so the
steel string acoustic and the electrics are only getting minimal use this
month.

Rob
