Peavey Tube Fex - Meat Plow - 14:00 07-11-08

WOW!
Two 12AX7's inside. 24 bit DSP. Only thing I don't like is the lack of
foot controls but I bought this thing for $100.00 broke. Needed a new
solder-on 3v NiCad battery inside --$7.99 at the local electronics
store.
The drive and distortions and general DSP blow away my Boss GT6.
I can buy a foot controller made for it on Ebay for less than $100,
probably a lot less. These things retailed for $900.00 in their day.
The built-in tuner sucks dick though. That's ok I recently picked up
a Korg DRT-1 dirt cheap.
This is a keeper.

I'd-a ditched the NiCd altogether and used a lithium with a series
diode (or if'n yas got the schematic, disable the charging circuit).
Them "nicads" are bad mojo.

The old Amiga fix;-)

Pretty much anything I come across with a NiCd for backup gets trashed
in favor of a lithium. Done it on countless synths, pinball MPUs and
video game boards. Those things start outgassing and you got a huge
mess on yer hands.

I've repaired a few Amiga motherboards with ye olde battery leak, track
repair, component replacement. Makes a hell of a mess alright. Had to
bin a few boards, once it eats thru a multilayer board its all over.
Atari computers never had that problem, strangely even on the later
Amiga's they still persisted in using NiCad's.
A small diode and a battery clip from a PC motherboard and away you go.

I'll keep an eye on it. When it fails the thing doesn't boot. I put
some tape underneath in case it leaks.

I understand what makes the Tube Fex killer was that it actually used
the proper plate voltage on the 12AX7s. I like it when someone scores a
keeper like that :)

Tape won't do any good. It doesn't leak a fluid, its a gas (potassium
hydroxide IIRC) and it goes everywhere.....climbs up wire.....just
contaminates everything within close (or not so close) proximity. I'd
plan on replacing it every 5 years or so just for cheap insurance.

The old battery leaked hence the tape. The battery is located on the
top side so any out gassing would vent through the nearby vent slots
over the tubes. However this is a bit worrisome the more I think about
it. I've been servicing pro-audio gear for 20+ years and now rely on
it as income so I've seen this scenario before. NiMHi is probably the
way to go in this case. Only problem is finding the correct
arrangement to get the right maH @ 3.6 volts seeing this was a 3x
button cell package.
