During The Who's halftime show, when Roger Daltry sang, "It's only
teenage wasteland", my wife said, "He's singing about his
grandchildren".

Heh...I missed the whole game including the halftime show. We got over 30
inches of snow here, and I was out working on the shoveling for a lot of the
day. Decided to take a "brief" snooze in front of the TV for a half-hour or
so before the game, next thing I knew it was over!

So did I .
I'm sure the gangsters of NO had an entire evening to rob, rape, kill,
and pillage everything in their sight though.

Musically, The Who did a pretty good job. Townsend was a little sloppy
at times, but not enough to derail the songs.
The game was more exciting than usual. For a while it looked like
either team could win. I was VERY amused by the shots of Peyton
Manning sitting on the bench while The Saints had the ball. He had a
look on his face that reminded me of Michael C. Hall on "Dexter".
And most of the commercials sucked, except for the Snickers ad with
Betty White playing football, and the Denny's ones with the screaming
chickens.
That's about it.

After all these years, you'd think Townsend would know how to dress. He
kept fighting his jacket every time he'd do one of those patented
wheelhouse power chords. The front of the jacket would end up on the
front/face of the guitar, muting the strings. He'd have tuck the jacket
back behind the guitar and start anew. That really messed things up for
me. Killed some big power chords.
Plus, his volume was up and down a lot. Don't know if it was the sound
guy or him. He was definitely fooling with the volume pot a lot, so it's
hard to say.

Didn't anyone else get the impression they were lip syncing to a
recording (perhaps made during a rehersal)? I couple of times I saw
Daltrey start to sing after I heard him start. He had a look on his
face like "Oh yeah. I'm supposed to be singing now." I had some synv
problems between sound and picture in general due to digital TV, but I
don't think that was all of it.

I didn't think they were that good that night. Also though some was
maybe pre-recorded - Townsends wind mills didn't match up.. Made me
feel better about my own playing. Heck if the Who came come off
mediocre ............. ed s.

Just watched it... It was kind of weird how they rearraged all those
songs... That probably worked against them... I was watching on YouTube,
so, I can't comment on sync issues...
I'll say this... those songs are hard for a 20 year old to sing... My
hats off to Daltrey for trying... As for Townshend... I think his
playing is a lot more aggressive these days... I read that he takes the
necks off of all those Strats (the Fishman ones) glues them, then bolts
them back up - all in the spirit of sustain :)

His mic was too hot. To me it came off as he was trying to steal the
show. Musically, I though he was fine.
Ringo's young'n Zak did a great job on the drums IMO.

I note that they didn't sing "I hope I die before I get old," from "My
Generation."
;^)
Well, I'm a big fan of The Who from a long time back, but Pete really
disappointed me. Recognizing that howling out the high notes gets
tougher with age, Roger did admirably, IMO. In fact, he seemed to get
better as the show went on.
Pete seemed drunk or something. He was taking bad solos at
inappropriate times and screwing around with the whammy bar. In all,
it came off as if he was unprepared or unfit.
However, his tone was great with that Strat and those Fender amps
(anyone else smell an endorsement?)
