Clam city.

Twenty years too late for auto-tune software.
Somebody should put it out of its misery...

In all honesty I am Grateful that they are Dead. It's the only band I've
ever listened to that actually makes me nauseous.

Well, live up to your Nym why don't you?

Hah!

Dig it, I should not be posting here all fired up on my Sunday night
tequila, but . . .

Here's the thing. You have to be hip to dig the dead. If you are
square you cannot hear what is happening in there. Yes! It will make
you sick. It's a draught of Death, baby and you got to have the stuff
to take it in. Now I could get started talking all about the
historical context, and how incredibly innovative their music was for
the time, growing out of the folk tradition as it did (not the
"Hillbilly" -- that was pop, this was pure bluegrass on acid, a huge
difference.)

But I am not going to talk about that, all high on tequila as I am.
There is a spiritual depth to this music, that, trite as it may be to
say, was all about dying, gratefully, man; dying to SELF and being
reborn to SOMETHING ELSE other than your same old stinky old drawers.

SURE they sang out of tune sometimes, a lot of times, but they were
forgiven that, because of what the instruments were saying about JOY.
Can you dig joy? Can you get off on ABANDON? Not in the dark spaces
of anger, hate and macho tough-guy Heavy Metal B.S., but . . .

China Cat Sunflower? What is it?

It's an Acid Minuette, man. When you dance to that on the floor at
Winterland, with the Dead live before your face, and Jerry up there
beaming all that love, and kindness and goodness, and clean-hearted,
We are all in this together to be free and high, and happy and good to
one another -- baby, I'm gonna tell you something. You need to listen
more carefully to this, and ask of yourself where you have ever in
your life heard anything like those first couple minutes of China Cat
Sunflower before.

There's magic in that music. It took me most my life to finally get
the swing of it for the fun of playing it on my own guitar. Try it!
See if you can do it. I play it in G, it's mixolydian; goes from G
down to F and back again for the intro. You'll never get it on the
first try. And then you will begin to understand the magic of it.

Oh I certainly would never begrudge anyone's taste in music. I just offered
my personal opinion. They truly are THE one band that makes me nauseous. I
have buddies that are dead heads so I understand the thought process.

I don't get it and never will. I apologize if I came off brash but that's
the way I feel those guys.

I didn't follow them around. But the one concert I attended was sheer
magic. (Eyes for the Orient - Kingswood Theatre @ Canada's Wonderland north
of Toronto, 21 Jun 1984)

We were on grass (literally) and it was the first warm sunny day in a
while. The grass was full of spider egg casings. When the spiderlings
hatched and started ballooning, a lot of people didn't notice. Everyone who
was sitting down had dozens if not hundreds of them. We got a real kick out
of pretending to hallucinate to the young ladies present, by pointing out
the spiders and saying "Ohhh, I'm so wasted I can see spiders all over you,
look, here's a few on your arm..." Then they would shriek and start shaking
their bodies around to dislodge the spiders, which, of course, was the
intended outcome.
