Pedal review Vox Tonelab LE - Grip - 2-:07 -0-10-20

Been considering of one these for a while as I like dragging around as
little as possible. So when I saw one on CL locally I went to see it.
They sell everywhere for $399. THis one was a few months old, was
played a couple of hours and the guy decided to stick with his old
Digitech RP-10.....good for me as I basically got a brand new unit for
$200. figuring if I don't like it, I can easily recoop the buckeroos!
Tried it with my JMP 2204 ( the one you guys talked me into switching
to el34's and if I may say one of the best things I've done
ampwise ) , then my Boogie, a 70's Pro reverb, 60's Ampeg VT-40 and
finally my Tech21 TM-60 4X10 combo.....VERY first thing I noticed was
no matter what amp I plugged into the pedal being inline did NOT alter
the amp's natural tone whatsoever! I also have a Pod XT, Digitech
RP-10 and RP-14D, and a slew of old collectible pedals and have never
before been able to start with the amp's natural tone. I always had to
pretty heavily redo the amp in question's Eq section to get to a
somewhat "neutral positon from which to start tweaking the pedals.
Seriously, this is the most transparent gizmo I've found. The amp
models ( when I tried them ) end up sounding like pedals of their own
instead of variations of the same fuzz box so to speak. Very useful
tool, the mods and time based effects are superb as well.....not quite
as "on the fly" switching friendly as my Line 6 short board stomp
wise, but I'll adapt.
Guitar, amp, LE, 2 cables simple.....
Keep in mind I ALWAYS reserve the right to think my tone sucks at a
later date :-)

Good price, if I could find one locally I'd pick one up too. I
currently have a Line 6 Spider Valve (Bogner tube amp) with the
shortboard...it is a good amp, but I still would like a board like the
Vox that could be used with ANY amp. Good luck with it. If you get
tired of it, you could always sell it to me.

Curious, I can read the specs...but from someone who knows...How does
the VOX seem sizewise compared to the Short Board? How does the wah
sound in your opinion?

The Vox Tonelab LE is a bit larger than the short board.....I know cuz
I have a great gig bag that holds the SB, the Pod XT and cables, I was
hoping it would fit the same bag, but I had to order a gator "mini
keyboatd" bag that fits the LE well. Was about 30 bucks
The wah is a good one, I have not yet adjusted the pedal to my
parameters, travel, tone, etc. but it sounds good.....that said I like
the wah on the line 6 too, had alot of wah samples with the latest
firmware update. I judge these against my stand alone cry baby and
Ibanez weeping demon which is probably the most versitile wah I've
had. But so far, I do not have anything bad soundwise to say about the
LE. :-)

Re: Pedal review Vox Tonelab LE - iarwain - 2-:07 -0-10-20

I was looking at getting one of these several years ago. I have one
of Vox's modeling amps and have been very impressed with it. I'm
always looking for something that makes for easy recording and it
looks like this would accomplish that - just record direct as it has
cabinet emulation. I used to like messing around with recording
direct with things like the SansAmp years ago but I wasn't really
happy with the sound. The technology has improved a lot since then.

I agree with you on the Digitech stuff, it affects the natural tone of
the amp, which is not cool.

One more question if you don't mind...I don't know where, but I
remember reading complaints...something about not being able to use
the distortion with the wah. I can't imagine this is true, maybe it's
something to do with not being able to set the parameters for both or
something. Is any of this true as far as you can tell?

Cool deal on keeping the JMP -: here's mine with a dunlop crybaby &
some stand alone pedals.

The wah happens to be on the same rotary selector switch as the
distortion pedals, that is true. I assume you can only have one going
at a time, but it's not a problem for me.....the reason being I find
the amp settings that are high gain MUCH more realistic for my
distorted sounds, you have so much control over say the UK or USA high
gain preset as in gain, chanel volume, I simply back off the gain on
one of these to clean it up or have a slightly overdriven sound, I
truly have no problem getting good distorted sounds, this also records
well, just tried it tonight.:-)
