New Strat - Russell Watson - 2-:07 -0-10-20
|
|
I wandered into Buy More yesterday, past the Nerd Herd and into the
bowels of the store, mostly looking at DVDs and CDs. Then I remembered
they sell instruments there now. Found a Highway One Strat I liked,
the color they call honey blonde. I played it a bit unlugged and liked
how it feels so I plugged in in to see how it sounds and liked that
too. I asked the kid working in there how their finance thing worked
and he said 18 months no interest, just fill out a credit app up front
for a Best Buy credit card and however much you qualify for you can
charge up to that amount. They cleared me for about $300 over the
price of the guitar so about 20 minutes after walking in I was on my
way out with it. Called my brother to tell him and realized that
though I have owned 5 Strats in the past 30 years this is the first
brand new one I've ever owned, and only the 2nd new guitar at all, the
other being the PRS I bought back in '88. Needless to say my fingers
are a little tender today, since I plonked on it until about 5AM.
Guitar is nicely setup, plays great and sounds awesome so I am pretty
happy all the way around.

Nice score! I've got an older one (2005), I like everything but the
pickups. Got Fralin replacements on order.

Hey, Oscar! I only talk about the biker part of my "other" life over
there: not sure if I've ever even mentioned musical interests beyond
what I like to listen to. Running joke between Topcat and me is that
if we ever went on roadtrip together I'd kill him if he touched the
radio. '80s music, y'know... ;-)

They've hot-rodded the pickups on them now and the stock alnicos sound
great.

you got a great guitar there! I picked up mine two years ago, and for
the most part I'm pretty satisfied with it. I did change the trem to a
Wilkinson (because I didn't like the flimsy trem setup on this, I
snapped the bar a few days after I bought it, and figured if Fender
changed it under warranty it'd be more of the same) and swapped out the
bridge pickup for a JB, but the alnico single-coils stayed, and it has
a great neck.
I think the Highway 1s have just been discontinued by Fender, replaced
by the new American Special series (the same specs as the H1s but with
urethane finsihes as opposed to the nitrocelluose - the new HSS version
is stunning in black ). Steve's Music has quietly discounted theirs,
and Long & McQ's just put out a mailing for a national inventory
blowout this weekend in which the H1 guitars are being sold for $575 CDN

The H1 has been discontinued? That's a real crime as it's a great strat, one
of the best to be honest.
Is this "urethane" the same thing as "poly"? I have to say that the nitro of
the H1 was what gave it much of it's appeal as it looked great and felt
great too. To my ears it really made the strat sing sweeter than the poly
ones in the same price range (and above). ThiNk I'll grab one while they're
still available brand new.
