my new prize-winning song "In Your Arms" - Daniel Dreibelbis - 2-:06 -0-10-20

after nearly ten years of recording, mixing, writing and sharing my
music, I finally can say that I finally won a prize for it :)

My most recent song "In Your Arms" was written especially for the
January 2010 KVR Audio Competition - and thanks to the denizens and
other contestants who voted, I was awarded third prize - the first time
I've managed to crack the top three in the compo.

Needless to say, I'm stoked about the win - and it'll be interesting to
see what I can do with the Russian Instruments sample DVD I won :)

It's now up on Soundclick for your listening pleasure - Be warned, I
sing again, but in one of my better performances. It's also got some of
my most ambitious mixing to date.....

Once again, comments and constructive criticism is always appreciated!

vocals - me through Shure Summit mike
guitars - Epiphone Les Paul, Squier Tele Custom II through Digitech RP-250
lead guitar - Les Paul through NI Guitar Rig 3
bass - Peavey Millennium BXP through IK Mutimedia Ampeg SVX
synths - NI FM8, discoDSP Discovery
drums - Drumcore

Good stuff, Daniel! No reason to feel embarrassed about your singing,
either. Better than I could do with that style.

Catchy, good production, good tones, and the canned drums don't sound
overtly canned. Nice work.

Yeah, great arrangement, great mix, great production, and good job!
You have reason to be stoked over the prize. I'm hearing strong
influences from a number of groups and it in a good way. I like it.
RichL is right about no need to feel embarrassed about your singing
especially the musicality and feel of it. However, I'm am sorry to say
that your own assessment of your voice is correct. No pipes. Obviously
there is little one can do about that since we are all born with the
voice we were born with. Something that might work with some songs
would be to alter your voice to a more "cartoon" voice as some singers
have been known to do. In that case natural pipes become unimportant.
Just a suggestion. Or even better find a great singer to collaborate
with you.

That is fundamentally untrue. Singing can be taught, and there is
even a DVD or a hundred. Some people are unteachable, but I
don't think Dan is one of them. Hank Alrich knows of one DVD
that is apparently recommendable. He hangs on the acoustic group.

Besides, I kinda liked what I heard. Sounds kinda like the guy
from UFO.

Warning, though: sometimes voice lessons make you sound somewhat
"trained" or operatic. But there are even "scream" style teachers.

Ha! Let's see all the prizes *you* won, Mr. Man. :)

(I keed).

If my voice sounded like Dan's, I would consider running
it through a guitar amp or fuzzbox, then mixing it back in. Just a
thought. Add a little grit. Maybe double with a Green Bullet -
Jack White does that, and it sounds pretty good.

Great job in all aspects for that genre of music! Personally, I think
your voice fits well. A female voice counter part might add a fun
element.

Cheers,
Toby

No it's not. Singing can be taught but pipes can't. Sure, some aspects
of a voice can be improved and musical presentation can be improved,
but I already said I thought he was doing pretty good in those
departments!

Don't get me started on "singers" who just scream! And yeah, for sure
Dan sounds at least as good as some of the screechers out there (no,
I'm not saying he's screeching). And I'd point out that operatic
voice training is in a sense the very kind of "voice modification"
experiments I was suggesting, though I wasn't thinking operatic, but
the idea is similar.

I said "suggestion" not "word of God"! :-)

Ah. So now it comes out that your suggestion is basically the same as
mine! I was saying a little modification and you are saying the same
thing only maybe do it electronically. And Yes, I totally agree with
you that such things are a direction worth investigating which can do
wonders. I mean if you've got the musical part down, then working out
your tone is another question which is like icing on the cake. I
don't think any of us here are holding are noses and saying Dan
sucks! Dan himself implied he was not satisfied with the sound of his
own voice.

Well, you did say pipes. By which I presume you to mean "the
equipment in yer neck". Dunno about that - an awful lot of it is
"chops".

My understanding (not having done it) is that it just teaches
you how to roughen up a voice that's too much about fundamental.

Heh! Just an attempt at levity, sir.

thanks!

I have to tell you - this one was pretty spontaneous. I've been
finding lately that I'm waking up with ideas for songs running through
my head, ones that usually don't come out when sitting down with a
guitar and trying to write, because all the cliches come out.

I was determined that this one wasn't going to escape :)

Thankfully it helped that I have my computer setup all ready to go now
in case I needed to record something quick early in the morning (and
using modelling software comes in handy, so you can record at lower
volume). It was just a matter of calling up Drumcore within Cubase,
finding a loop to jam against (let's face it, using a dedicated loop
gets the feel down better than using a metronome click), and doing the
song down in a couple of passes. Then using Drumcore to drag and drop a
number of loops to create a cohesive and fitting drum performance. Bass
came next, a second guitar part, the vocal (using a Shure Summit mike I
picked up at L&McQ's for $20 on Boxing Day), and then the lead. While
Guitar Rig 3 isn't as convincing as Amplitube or the RP-250 for amp
tone, it does have some happening effects NI put in, some of them are
pretty crazy!

and if you think that was neat, a few days ago I had another early
morning brainstorm that's going to top it - too long for another
contest, but just as interesting. Anyone for some glam? :)
