Harrison's "Give Me Love" with lap steel - RichL - 2-:06 -0-10-20
|
|
As I have mentioned here before, I picked up a cheap lap steel a couple
of months ago, and I postponed really learning to play it until
recently.
I had this idea of doing a cover version of George Harrison's "Give Me
Love", and I thought it would be a natural for the lap steel, so that
gave me some incentive to get busy!
Anyway, I've been working on this song for the past few weeks and
finally got it finished.

Purists will note that t's not a carbon copy, there are a number of
intentional variations from the original, notably dropping the piano
part and replacing it with another guitar part. Also, the bass part
doesn't attempt to replicate the original but tries to be true to the
song's "spirit". But I did attempt to reproduce the original
(two-track) slide part.
Comments and criticisms welcome!

Thanks Rich. I really enjoyed that. The slide was pretty-much spot on.

The voice was very good and all the guitar tones spot on. Your
recordings always sound very polished for being recorded at home. Now
how about some Queen ( I'm thinking Now I'm Here) :-)

Hey Jim, coincidentally, "Now I'm Here" is one of the first tunes I ever
recorded, back when I just had my eight-track Fostex setup. If I
learned one thing from that exercise, it was that I can't sing like
Freddie and I shouldn't even try!

It is, I'm still not satisfied with the vocals, but I think they're as
good as they're gonna get.
I thought the slide would be the hardest part, I was all set to give up
on the song altogether because I struggled with it initially, but I had
sort-of an aha! moment, then that part fell into place. What really
surprised me was the vocals. I'm singing notes in the main melody that
are usually comfortable for me to reach, but I realized that in most
songs I don't *stay* up in that range very long. This one is *always*
up there. But the worst was that middle harmony part: right on the edge
between my normal voice and falsetto I finally decided to do it in
falsetto but the isolated track sounds terrible! The high falsetto part
in the last verse was actually the easiest for me, oddly enough.
Anyway, I'm kinda glad I'm done with it ;-)
