Pickups for Strat - adam79 - 1-:26 -0-10-20

I have a Squire Strat with a Maple Neck that plays like a dream, but the
electronics are junk. It's currently setup in the normal S/S/S
configuration. Since all of my other guitars have Humbuckers, I figured
I'd keep to the S/S/S setup. I'm just looking for some advice on a set
of pups to replace the stock ones. I mainly play Metal/Grunge type
stuff, but also have alot of songs that would benefit from that vintage
single coil Strat sound.

Thanks,
-Adam

From personal experience http://store.guitarfetish.com/lilpuxlnewfi.html for
the bridge

http://store.guitarfetish.com/64sttegrbosu.html middle and neck. Wire in the
lil puncher in place of the bridge pup.

BAM!! a tone machine.

After years of trying innumerable replacement pups, I've settled on Seymour Duncan.

They have a pup for every conceivable sound, they're reliable, that'll do me.

that's pretty loaded, as there are all sorts of choices for pickups
out there that will fit your Squier, with all sorts of tones.

Myself, I prefer Seymour Duncan's single-sized humbuckers (I use them
in a Peavey Falcon). For a vintage clean, I like the Vintage Rails. The
George Lynch Lil' Screamin' Demon (which I'm not sure is still
manufactured) is an amazing bridge pickup that takes to gain without
mushing out. The Hot Rails is a very popular model, but be aware it
doesn't sound good clean, it's more a brute force pickup designed for
distortion purposes. I note that SD is now doing an Yngwie Malmsteen
signature pickup, which will be more clean but still powerful (and full
humbucking).

But also check out the Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless, which they're
putting in their higher-end models (like the Clapton and Beck models).
If you want more of a traditional Fender sound without noise, these are
sweet. (Don't mistake these for the previous Noiseless models, which
are the equivalent of an icepick to the ears).

If you're on a budget, there's also the Guitar Fetish pickups, which
can be had at good prices, and some of which are considered bang for
the buck.

If you go for the humbucking route, be sure to have these wired with
500K pots - when I did this with the Falcon, it was like lifting a
heavy rubber blanket off the tone I was getting with its stock pots.

Go trolling the Rio Grande site. I will bet that they're
peachy - but I have not tried their Strat pickups myself.
I have a BBQ Bucker and a Fat B*sterd single coil, and they
are nicely done.

Re: Pickups for Strat - adam79 - 1-:27 -0-10-20

Anyone have any experience with P-90s in a Strat? I was thinking of
putting it in the bridge position.

Thanks for the advice,

here's a perfect set for you.
they are 'noiseless' but sound incredible.
I have tried them all from rails/blades (obviously noiseless)
to single coils (noiseless) from duncan to dimarzio to kinmans.. etc.. etc

- these are my favorite set for Strat in SSS configuration.

Neck - Dimarzio Area 58 or 61 ( I prefer the 61 since it holds together
better if you use boosts or gain - but the 58 gives you a little more top
end chime which is great for cleans although might wash out a little under
heavier boost/grind/overdrive)

Middle - Dimarzio Area 61

Bridge - Dimarzio Virtual Solo (note: this is not the vintage solo it
is simply called Virtual Solo - DP420)

You're all set. You'll have everything from classic strat sounds
in the neck and middle and the bridge gives you slightly more beef
in the cleans and then it can handle whatever overdrive/distortion/whatever
you want to throw at it. And it can really grind and not flub out.
I have even used a Boss Metal Zone pedal with the bridge and it
can easily do any sort of Sabbath, Metallica and beyond... way beyond
and anything in between.

You can use 250k or 300k pots (don't use 500k pots) and also use
the standard .047 tone cap that Strats normally use.
If your pots need upgrading then just get CTS pots (250k or 300k)
and get yourself a nice .047 tone cap(s). You can certainly use the
cheapie 'ceramic disc' caps - but spend just a little more and get
some nice orange drops/trashcans or similar or Mallory caps. You're all set.

The only caveat is that I forget if the virtual solo had the same
polarity as the Area pickups. But that's no big deal. After wiring
it up - put back on the pickguard with a screw or two and then install
a guitar string or two - then select the 'in between' of middle and bridge.
If it sounds really thin and nasally - then detune the strings and unwind
and open up the pickguard and reverse the hot wire (pickup selector) with
the ground wire (back of pot) and reverse them - what was the hot is now
the ground and the ground is now to pickup selector (hot). Leave any
bare wire ground wire where it is (to back of pot).

One last thing -- while you are wiring this - take the time to
wire in the bridge pup to a tone pot. it's a simple "jumper' wire
right on the pickup selector. There are many diagrams on the web
showing how to do this - or find an _American" strat wiring diagram
which shows the little jumper on the pickup selector and that is how
the bridge pickup gets a tone control (in American Strat wiring the
bridge and middle pup use the bottom tone control - the neck pickup
alone gets the top tone control).

ok. that's my 2 cents.

EMG's will cover all the bases I'd reckon, especially the DG-20. It has
a mid boost that gets pretty heavy and can be rolled off to sound like
the SC's they are.

For traditional Start the world is your oyster. I have Duncan SSL-1's
that sound exactly like I'd expect a vintage Strat to sound. I also have
Fender CS Fat 50's that sound like they are meant to, as well. 50's
Strat tone with a bit more Fat ;-)

I second the EMGs. Had them for years and love them.

all these guys have given you good advice, however, i've yet to find a
single coil sized strat bridge pickup, that sounds good to me as a metal or
grunge pickup, yet will clean up enough to get true strat clean sparkle.

to me, its either one or the other.. figure out which sound you use more
often, and then live with just the "ok" results of the other sound. I use a
screamin demon, that was mentioned. Its a great pickup, not only does it
clean up acceptable when you back down the volume, but you can split coil
it or coil tap it, and its not a bad single coil sound at all; a little
weak on volume, so i punch the sound up with an EQ pedal, when i flick the
switch.

Rio grande single coils are killer too, especially the Tall Boys. I dont
know how they would sound with a stompbox pushed into "metal" territory.
