All my early guitars as a teenager were Gibson or Gibson copies, I
couldn't stand Strats. Eventually, the tones I liked most I couldn't get
with any Gibson, but with Strats I could.

Over the years, my tastes have become more eclectic, and I've come to
accept that each has it's own pros and cons. No matter how hard I try, I
can't get, say, a Larry Carlton-like tone with a Strat, so I don't
bother, and same if I want a crisp, twang tone, the LP gets put aside.

Trying to make one sound like the other is a compromise IMHO.

The only real difference is neck stability. Gibson's set necks DO have
issues that you simply don't (or rarely) get with bolt-ons.

I know it's a controversial subject, just my 2c worth :)

But if you bend the string first and then release, the pitch drops, does
it not?

I agree...I am no Strat basher. That's why I always felt I HAD to have
a Strat. I just didn't get along with them for some reason.

You have to work a Strat more IMO. I find myself sorta whizzing around
with Gibson necks (esp SGs). But when I want CRUNCH Gibson takes it.

What's your opinion on that Steve, in terms of negative effect on a
guitar? I do it sometimes but my lead guy told me to never do it with
his new mia strat. I personally think a guitar should be tough enough
to stand a little bend of the neck.

I failed to mention that I do like Teles though.

Yes it does but it doesnt drop to BELOW its standard tuning. A whammy will
take it lower.

You can do the same thing by fretting a lower note that's bent up to
the note you want and lower it from there. I do it often.
