cheap effect pedal finds - Squier - 7-:03 -0-09-20

Sure, there are a lot of good effects pedals when you
start to spend over $100 (US) and there are many great
pedals when you start to go over $200 (US).

What pedals have you found under $50 - $60 that work good,
sound great and were a big surprise to you in how good they were.
Yes, I am sure there are tales out there of some pedal that is
normally very expensive but you found it in a garage sale for cheap.
I am talking about pedals that you can find new or used for cheap
and that are not some once in a lifetime incredible find in the trash
or at some flea market where they gave it away. (in other words save
the story about finding the Klon for $5.00 at some local yard sale
for some other thread that might be 'incredible finds at the flea market').

Please add to the list anything interesting you have found out or
used along the way. Make sure they are inexpensive new or can be
commonly found used at cheap prices. (I'd personally be interested
in anyone actually using those cheap Danelectro pedals - I wouldn't
gig with them since they seem to be easily breakable but for home use
maybe they would be ok - especially for people that just want to try
out an effect or two)

Here's some I have found to start the list:

1. Digitech Bad Monkey (this has got to be one of the best tube screamer pedals
out there for under $100)
2. DOD FX52 Classic Fuzz

1 Bad Monkey, great sound and well made

2 Behringer 2-knob compressor. Not to be confused with their plastic box
line, this is in a black metal box, Dynacomp style. Very quiet, maybe due
the miniature components?

For what it's worth, the size of the components has little to do with
it. What really matters is the *quality* of the components and the
design which is why really good pedals are more expensive.

That said, the Behringer stuff is pretty good value for money.

My Bad Monkey is a nice compliment overdrive to my Visual Sounds Jekyll &
Hyde ($89 AUS vs $349 AUS new). The Bad Monkey has nearly the same sound as
the Jekyll overdrive but it's different enough (and a sufficiently good
tone) to have both. Only the J&H does the distortion work for me though.

I was thinking about the same thing---picking up a couple cheap
pedals, like Danelectro or whatever, just to see what they do. Found
a few decent Youtube clips. Here's one guy, "Rotren" (which is nertor
spelled backwards) that actually manages to do some cool demos. Quite
a lot of stuff on his own site, Dolphinmusic.com. At first I thought
he was playing Guitar Center cliches (and he does play a couple), but
he's actually got chops, and knows how to play the pedals. You may
find the demos useful:

There's also http://BuildYourOwnClone.com that has build-it-yourself
versions of a lot of famous pedals, usually around $100 or so. That's
worthwhile if you are good with a soldering iron.

I've read nothing but surprisingly good reviews about the Dano Cool
Cat series of pedals (metal chassis and jacks). That said, I've got
the Cool Cat Distortion ($40) and Drive ($24) pedals on order from
MF. Of course, the Drive went on backorder as soon as I ordered
mine. All the reviews & test drives I've seen look really good...the
Vibe stomp sounds good too. The one downside is knob placement on the
back panel instead of on top.

I've had nothing but good luck the Behringer Vintage OD pedal...yeah,
it's flimsy as hell (especially the knobs) and changing batteries is a
pain in the ass with that ridiculous lid clip, but the sounds are
good, it's not a tone-sucker or noisy, and for $30 it's held up well
for over 2 years now (I'm not rough with my gear, though).

The knob placement doesn't bother me at all. But I have a "set it and
forget it" approach to effects.

I had the vibe for a while, and wound up returning it. The effect
itself was excellent, but I couldn't deal with the volume boost. It
was annoying. I still have the old Dano Chicken Salad vibe, and that
works better.

Supposedly, the Behringer SF300 is a clone of my favorite fuzz (the
Boss FZ-2). I ordered one from a local store half a year ago. The damn
thing hasn't arrived yet.

I bought a Korg 411fx for $30 bucks. It's not incredible but has many
great fetures.

I got an old used MXR Envelope Filter about 8 months ago for $40. It's
the small mustard-yellow one with two knobs. I have gone through a
bunch of filter pedals in the last 10 years, and this one is my
favorite so far.

I bought one for a birthday present - and the thing is amazing. I'd
been looking for a sick-sounding fuzztone (think of some of the more
fuzzed-out Poison Ivy bits on Cramps records) and this thing delivers.
In fact, it's got two fuzz settings and a noise gate - how cool is that?

I'm also a fan of the metal-boxed Behringer compressor, and like that
too. Transparent, quiet.
