Tuning a Guitar That Has Not Been Tuned in 2 years... - Musicman59 - 6-:30 -0-09-20

Forget relative tuning for now... having trouble getting started with
a tuner. every string is so far off that the tuner is not recognizing
the strings. Would rather not pop a few strings by turning the pegs
too far.

thought about tightening the strings and leave them for a bit to get
some tension back and then try again later...

anyone have a process that works for them in this situation (besides
getting all new strings) The ax has not really been played at all.

thx - Craig

You just won the AG cheap bastard of the year award, -and it's only June!

thank you, thank you. so what do I win? (might I assume you are
referring to me not wanting to buy new strings for $5.00 for a $500
guitar? My only reasoning for that is that new strings will be just
as way out of tune as the ones on the ax now... Or am I wrong in
assuming that?

You should consider new strings for starters look at it like this two
years, 730 days that comes to 0.006849315 cents a day what a deal.

Learn how to tune a guitar by ear (it isn't hard), or take it to
someone who knows how.

...I got ya beat - the OEM stings on my '79 Explorer turned 30 years old
this year. And they still sound great on the few occasions I actually
drag the thing out and play it. It's sort of a point of pride not to
change them now...

...and they tune just fine. I have an older Korg tuner that not only
shows me the note I'm tuning to, but also the octave it's in. It's a
bit larger, so I just use it for an "around the house" tuner...if your
tuner will show you the octave # (i.e.; E 2, or something like that) I'd
think you should just be able to tune on up and not have to worry about
snapping anything by over winding.

Works for my '79...which I probably only even look at once every five
years. It always tunes right up and plays just fine, like the day I
bought it.

Keep plucking the string as you increase the tension, while keeping an eye
on the tuner...

I can think of no reason for this problem, other than a problem with the
tuner.

There are dozens of online tuners. This was my first search hit:
http://www.gieson.com/Library/projects/utilities/tuner/

Tune it by ear with your computer. Then try the tuner again. If the
tuner has a microphone, see if it responds to the online tuner.

Spend your $5 on pitch pipes or a tuning fork. I change tunings and strings
all the time, and use pitch pipes to get in the right ballpark. You play a
note on the pipe, then find which fret it is on the detuned guitar, then
tune up until the pipe pitch coincides with the open string.
