Sweetwater Gearfest - mercutio - 6-:28 -0-09-20

The wife and I went to Gearfest on Saturday. We spent the day looking
at all the different guitar vendors booths ( Gibson, Fender, Taylor,
Vox, Ibanez, Gretsch PRS) amplifier vendors (Vox, Marshal, Fender ,
Line 6). tons of vendors with synth software and midi keyboards plus
lots stand alone synths.
I was appalled at the price of most of the guitars. While I
personally have paid way too much in the past this was just crazy.
There were very few really nice guitars for less than 2k. Everything
we looked at was in the $2500- $3000 ( altho there werea couple of
$1900 PRS and 2 $2100 Les Pauls). There were also alot of $3500 plus
guitars with prices up to $6k And 7K in all the lines,

Once again the high point was watching Greg Koch give a 45 minute
seminar on the Fender Vintage Mocified Amps (OK but not "I goota have
1 " impressed) and the Fender Road Worn Guitars ( the whole idea
baffles the hell out of me) But he was great and incredibly
entertaining, The wife is a fan so she took the video camera and
taped most of it. I will post some to you tube but first want to
email him and get permission. Will let you know when it goes up.

All in all a fun and educational experience. Clean, well organized
and pleasant. People there from In, OH, NY, MI, and PA that I know of.
Maybe next year some of you folks here can attend. ( If anyone were
interested would be glad to offer any assistance I could)

My thought is...if you have $2k or more to burn, spend it on a good
amp. I'd never spend more than $500-$1000 on a guitar.

The way I look at it there are a lot of people that can and will spend
2K or well over 2K they are the same type people that throw down $100 bills
at a crap table when your hoping to win $100. If people would not spend it
they would not ask that price. Myself I spent close to 3K on a Breedlove
(2005) but now that's the first acoustic guitar I've bought ( parents')
since 1963 so I did have some time to save. Now amps I did spend over 2K on
my custom Fargen money well spent guitars you can find killer electrics for
$500 Killer amps for $500 good luck.

A long time ago, I heard that inflation doubles the cost of everything,
every ten years. I've lived long enough to see that prove to be true, and
I've always used that rule to estimate where prices will be or should be. I
bought my first SG for $330 back around 1964. The ten year rule tells me
that the same guitar should be about $7000 in 2009. I've seen new SG's go
for that and more. Just about all guitars, Strats, Less Pauls, etc, from
that era were priced very similiar, and I would expect to be paying several
thousand in todays market for any of those models. So , when I see new
guitars selling for 300 bucks ????? Something has got to be missing, cheaper
materials, cheaper labor, mass produced, inferior knock offs? I hate to be
the kind of person that buys my jeans just because of the label, but when I
see the same product 40 years later selling for the same price, I know it is
not the same product.

A veteran luthier told once that right before the Beatles made it over
to the US, guitar sales were few and far between...they weren't a
lifestyle necessity. Woods chosen for guitars were (allegedly)
seasoned naturally over the course of years instead of kiln-dried or
even barely seasoned like cheap guitars are today. After the Beatles,
sales of guitars shot through the roof, and the available supply of
wood quickly dried up (pun intended). Enter mass production, green
woods, woods dried too quickly, etc. The luthier seems to think
that's why guitars today have so many issues with frets popping out,
buzzing, etc.

$2184.33, not $7000.

An SG standard is about half that:

A very fancy custom is about $4k

Most stuff has overall gotten less expensive.

That may or may not be true.
