Also, Pan is now available for windows.

Gravity was my favourite in my windows days. Xnews has really good
filtering - very similar to pan - both of which base their filter file
syntax on slrn.

There are also Seamonkey and Thunderbird but the filtering is a bit
dumbed down.

I forgot that that one's not free.

I checked Pan out briefly... seemed kinda buggy.

Yes, I liked Gravity a whole lot, even payed for a license before it
was abandoned. It was mainly an off-line reader, and back in those days
of dial-up it was the best. I'm glad it was picked up again and is
still being developed. I should check it out again.

The one that seems to have the most capability, and excellent filtering
ability is 40tude Dialog. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get along
with the interface.

Xnews is the best for the way I work. Too bad it's mostly been
abandoned (although the author popped up recently with an update). I'm
afraid it has some built-in design limitations that might make it
unusable eventually. But for now, it's my favorite.

I think Thunderbird sucks just as bad as Outlook Express as a
newsreader.

I just downloaded it to give it a try. I like it.

A nice thing about Gravity is that it's the only free one on my list
that's still being actively developed. Xnews and Dialog have been
abandoned, or all but.

As I recall, Gravity's filtering isn't as capable as Xnews or Dialog.
