Recommendations for cheap guitar - Ron - 6-:27 -0-09-20
|
|
I am looking for a cheap yet decent guitar. My main two concerns are light weight and an ibanez-like neck with good upper level fret access.
I have a pair of spare humbuckers I could use to change the factory ones.
So far I have found a few guitars online, most are from a manufacturer called Jack and Danny, but it is difficult to judge their weight, so I wonder if anyone is familiar with those models and the wood used on them.
Here are the contestants:
*************
Jack & Danny JD-805
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Jack-Danny-JD-805-Q-Transparent-Red-Burst-/art-GIT0006255-001
This guitar looks nice, but I am not sure about the weight of the sapele body.
*************
Jack & Danny JD L310H
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Jack-Danny-JD-L310H-White-Wilkinson-Pickups/art-GIT0013762-000
Again, I am not sure about the weight of the gingko body, but this guitar also looks nice.
*************
Jack & Danny PMS 30
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Jack-Danny-PMS-30-CSB-Cherry-Sunburst/art-GIT0009476-000
This guitar looks really good to look at, currently sold out and probably on the heavy side?
*************
Now on to better known brands:
Peavey Raptor Junior
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Peavey-Raptor-Junior-RD-Red/art-GIT0014228-000
Very cheap, and probably a POS unless I am really mistaken.
*************
Kramer Pacer FT202S
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Kramer-Pacer-FT202S-LPB-Lake-Placid-Blue/art-GIT0015514-000
Not sure about its weight, and looks mostly modest, but I believe kramers generally have some good playability.
*************
Epiphone Les Paul Junior Single Cut
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/-/art-GIT0015721-000
Only a single pickup though price is very attractive.
*************
Dean Guitars EVO XM
http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/GRD/Dean-Guitars-EVO-XM-SN-Satin-Natural/art-GIT0008941-000
I once tried this guitar and it is really light and playable. However, it looks like many people judge its overall quality negatively.

I know this sounds like self promotion, but I'm not joking. I have a
Yamaha PAC512 on EBay right now, talk about a thin Ibanez like neck
with total fret access! And cheap too.

Well, a lot of us Americans (non-redneck types, at least) don't know
much about it either.
Formula One is racing.
SCCA is racing.
NASCAR is a bunch of rednecks turning left with light beer ads all over
their cars. But I will say that the local boy just won one of the very
few road course races last week.

Why not an inexpensive Ibanez? The Jet King is one of my favourites, at any
price. Other makes with a good rep are Yamaha, Peavey, Squier. If it was
online, I would be looking at GFS (Guitar Fetish), But I would be cautious
about buying any super cheapo without playing and inspecting it very
carefully. - My music store mate has a whole clutch of cheap Ashtons and
Montereys, they might be excellent but I would want to check them out before
buying. He also sells a lot of Deans, and they seem OK, though the styles
aren't to my tastes.

Car Racin', H88 and wrasslin'. It's a 15 y.o. mother of 2 Southern world
what done crept out of the South.
Before air conditioning, the US South _was_ the nation's Latin / South
America. You can cool it, -but you can't make it ...cool -yet. ;-) M

Umm.. you just named the guitar. Ibanez.
Go out and try some of the less expensive RG models.
There ya go. Ibanez guitar ready to go.
cheap and decent is not completely oxymoronic if you take
your time and check out guitars. Don't let the first one
you pickup have you generalizing on that model.
You might pick up an RG that has terrible setup and
sharp fret ends.. etc. The next one you pick up might
have that slim fast Ibanez neck that feels silky fast
and no fret end problems.. and is set up low and fast.
Anyways, Ibanez makes a lot of lower end guitars that
only need some TLC, a nice setup applied, perhaps some fret work,
and maybe a pup change(s).
Really nice guitars once you have a little work on them.

How about the trems? Are they cheap on the low end? TA
