installing a humbucker in a single coil guitar.. need help!?!? - adam79 - 6-:27 -0-09-20

a friend just gave me his "made in indonesia" squire strat. it has the
traditional 3 single coil pu design, neck n' bridge r straight, bridge
pu is slanted. i want to replace the bridge pickup with a humbucker.
i've never done this before. i know i'll need to cut into the body, etc.
is there a website or other reference that goes step by step on how to
route the body, and then install the humbucker?

thanks,
-adam

Since it is hidden by the pickguard, I would use a chisel unless you already
have a router and the necessary skills.- In fact that is what did to my
pawnshop strat to convert it from SSS to HH. First buy a new pickguard in
HSS, if that is what you want, and use it to mark the location of the new
pickup cavity. Then cut it out with a chisel until the pickup will drop in.

On your tone pot question, I would convert them both to 500K, and try a
0.022microF cap. It is cheap, it won't do any harm, and it might do some
good. You might have to experiment to find whether and audio (A) or linear
(B) taper works best for you. Having had a JB for a short while, I would
also install a series-parallel switch. I didn't like the series sound, but
thought it was good in parallel.

Not necessarily. Pull the pickguard. There's a good chance the body is
already routed for humbucker. But then you'll need a pickguard, or
you'd need to cut that one. Not always that easy to do.

If the body isn't routed, why not use either a stacked or the blade
style humbucker in the single coil sized body? Sure, they aren't "the
same" (stacked will actually sound more single-coil-like), but you'd
save mucho hassle, and buying a new pickguard!

the guitar has been cosmetically trashed, i could maybe fetch $20 for
it. it's a good guitar to learn how to do repairs/installations on..

A Duncan JB, maybe? They sound good to me. What model of Squier is it?
