Volume/Tone Pots - adam79 - 6-:27 -0-09-20

I recently had a SD Jeff Beck humbucker installed (at the birdge
position) in my Fender Mustang. I wanna replace the 250k stock volume
pot to a 500k. Should I replace the 250k tone pot to 500k, or is it good
the way it is?

Thanks,
-Adam

Humbuckers prefer 500K audio taper pots.
By the way JB doesn't stand for Jeff Beck. It stands for Jazz Blues,
according to SD.

I think your question is fine. Restless Fingers Syndrome often attacks
beginners for asking what he thinks are stupid questions. Don't worry
about it.

Anyways, I was actually looking at the gear page the other day about
this very subject, as I was considering changing the pots in my SG.
check out the following sources of information; I found them
interesting and informative, you might also:

Tone pots vs Volume Pots; are they the same?

Also you might want to consider 1meg pots:

Good luck and I hope this helps answer your questions!

Personally I am wondering if putting in a 1meg pot vs. a 500k pot
would act like a treble boost (but allow me to roll it down back to a
warmer sound of course). Personally I like treble. And hey, if you can
roll it down to what it would have sounded like before why *not* use a
1meg? Options are good *ponder*

The JB (not actually Jeff Beck) pickup is over-wound with a hotter
output. Over winding causes highs to be "rolled off."

Using a 250K pot will also attenuate highs.

Want more highs? Use a higher value pot.

If you do change the pot, I'd recommend a push/pull DPDT with wiring for
"both coils parallel." It'll give you a brighter tone yet (at a lower
output level). It's two single coils, side by side, but retains the hum
bucking for noise reduction.

RFS: Are you retarded? It was a logical question.

Adam: There's not as much point to switching the volume control if the
tone pot is not swapped as well. Lower value pots cause a 'loading'
effect that rolls off highs, but many players use that to tame pickups
that they find too bright. Your call.

Good the way it is. Your ears would never notice the difference.

So that push/pull DPDT pot makes it so i can switch between series n'
parallel?

Would the 500k pot switch muck up the single coil pu at the neck?
