Martin Acoustic - LenBum - 6-:27 -0-09-20

I've been quiet for a while as I haven't had a gas attack in a few years.
But the Martin bug is back and I'm checking ebay, craigs list, etc for a
Martin acoustic. I've been concentrating on D-18's and D-28's. Any
suggestions on what other models and where I can look?

I've had four (1925 0-21, D-37K, J-40 and D16) and I'm no longer a big fan
of them, chiefly because not many have a tone I like. Also they vary in a
lot tonal quality within a model, so I would not buy one without trying it
anyway. I personally would be also be looking at the other two big American
factory makers, Larrivee and Taylor. The few Larrivees I've tried have
sounded good, and the Taylor bolt-on neck is a big plus for me. Breedlove is
a smaller US factory maker with a very good reputation, but I have never
tried one. My "best" acoustic is a boutique brand, Bourgeois, others in a
similar class are Collings and Santa Cruz, and very likely other I have
forgotten.

If you a dead set on Martin, I think you should get out and try a few *and*
compare them with other guitars to see what you are getting for your money,
especially Taylor and Larrivee if you want American, made to high standards
and with a good warranty.

I'll mention the few that I have liked, but it has to be thought of as
specific guitars, rather than models. Also I'm a blues-type fingerpicker, so
you might not like the same as me - a lot don't. They were all "tight"
sounding, with a good chimey harmonic content - a 000-18, a D-18 and a D-28.
Many, like the HD-28, with scalloped bracing usually sound to "open" in the
bass to me. "Tight" doesn't mean "clunker", that's the ones that sound like
the bass string needs changing after a couple of days playing, of which
there are many.

My GAS just isn't what it used to be. I find myself using "common sense"
and not throwing caution to the wind. Which I guess is a good thing. A trip
to Guitar Center will be on the calendar as there seems to be too many other
options as pointed out here. Martin, Breedlove, Taylor and Seagull will be
on the menu. Thanks

<g> Don't forget Larrivee. I know they are Canadian, but they now have a
factory in California, and the few I have tried have impressed me. One D-09
was an absolute killer. If you are spending significant $, I think it is
worth taking a few hours drive to find potential purchases - A bit of
internet research and maybe a few phone calls goes a long way in this.
