Bucket-list guitars? - markd - 6-:26 -0-09-20

I recently nabbed a sunburst ES-335 on eBay after making a guy an
offer I was sure he'd ignored. It arrived today and this thing is
beautiful. Mint condition, plays and sounds great. I was a bit nervous
committing to that kind of coin for something I couldn't put my hands
on first (and I know others swear they'd never do that). A few years
ago I rolled the dice on an eBay LP Custom, and it too was/is a gem.
Maybe I'm stupid-lucky on eBay. I do research and query the seller a
lot first of course.

This is one of those 'before I kick the bucket' guitars I've coveted
for a long time. I'm 47 and decided to stop fretting about the
economy/future, and said screw it... just buy one already.

I'm curious if others have a mental list of guitars they'd like to own
before they bite the dust? I still have a few like a PRS McCarty and
MIA 10-string BC Rich Bich for starters. Sorry if this sounds morbid,
especially in light of MJ. No correlation of any sort.

Heh....I got the bug a couple of years ago and had a custom guitar made
for me. It cost quite a bit more than I typically spend on a guitar,
but it fulfilled a dream, and it turns out it's now my favorite guitar
in the herd, cost factor aside.

I'd like a 335, definitely. I've only got two guitars with full buckers
(both Gibson, one is an SG and the other a double-cutaway Les Paul) but
nothing that has that combination of full buckers and semi-hollow.

Gotta watch it though...I've got 15 guitars now and my kids are already
starting to think I'm going senile.

I've got a really good used instrument store nearby, so I usually don't
plan ahead what I want. I just go there on occasion to see if they have
anything that catches my eye. If I ever find a good, cheap lap steel
I'll snap it up. Nothing else is really on the radar at this point.
I've spoiled myself already ;-)

Friend of mine got a super ES-347 that way. It's all in the gut and the
pictures, I think.

...I like the idea of a genuine Bich...but I think I already have my
bucket-axe - my MINT condition, black and gold '94 EDS-1275, which I
found after thinking about one during a hospital stint.

Sheer chance find...bought it on sight without even haggling.

Congratulations. You've been added to an elite group that float around
in my killfile toilet.

LP Goldtop Deluxe - '69 or '70 - used to own one.
PRS - early '80s - when there was only one model.

20 years ago, a white V; 10 years ago, a black LP Standard.

Now...probably a powder blue Suhr Strat. Second choice would be
Carvin's take on the 335 idea:

It depends on my mood. The two that generally come to mind first are both
lap steels, a style 4 Weissenborn or a Rickenbacher Frypan.

Sorry, but I'm with M on this one. The MJ reference in your original post
was trite
and patronizing. This is a guitar group, not a fan-club one. I liked MJ's
work and thought he was an unusual and talented performer, but he was
self-indulgent and far too eccentric as a human being.. Farrah Fawcett, in
her declining years, was much more socially conscious and tried to
contribute something to the world's awareness regarding social and health
issues, yet you didn't see fit to give her a nod. I see a problem there, not
in M's comment.

That said, I admired the idea of the 'bucket list' part of your post,
thought it was unique and original. I am one of the fortunate few who has
worked his way through most, if not all, of his 'bucket list' guitars. It is
a nice thing, but it sure does limit what one has to look forward to. :-(
