guitar combo amps w/ FX - adam79 - 6-:26 -0-09-20

i'm looking for a good guitar combo amp w/ digital fx. i had a fender
cyber deluxe, but i sold it a while ago. i'm looking to get another one,
and was just wondering yer opinons on which one is the best. i like the
johnson fx amps, i know sans tech makes one too, but i haven't tried it.
i have a line 6 POD xt2 and don't like the default sounds at all, so i
haven't bothered trying the line6 stuff.

thanks,
-adam

With all due respect, WHY? You lock yourself into technology that
rapidly depreciates in value.

If I had to have digital effects, I'd be keeping it in an effects loop
of a real tube amp. Better yet, maybe the Vox floor unit that uses a
12AX7 in power amp mode, before a good tube amp. Like a 100W silver
face Twin Reverb, for example.

i'm just talking about a bedroom amp. for writing songs with.. usually
when i'm going through the presets, i find a effect i wasn't thinking
of, and end up with something creative.

I think you would still be better of with a separate amp and multiFX. The
Epi VJ is a nice little tube amp that will go plenty loud enough for home
use. For messing about with FX, the Toneworks AX3G is cheap and cheerful,
and seems to work well in front of an amp. I'm not suggesting the AX3G
specifically, but my limited experience suggests that some multiFX work
better in front of an amp than others - which might work better direct to PC
or mixer.

for recording, bedroom and small basement jams (with tasteful drummer)
- Fender Super Champ XD.
excellent little amp. I have to get ready to go (playing out late squad
tonight with my 'garage' band buds. So can't type a whole thing here
but give this amp a try. It really is excellent for low wattage small
amp (imho). lots of great tones in there.

Like I was saying, I already have an all tube practice amp that sounds
killer, '64 Guild Thunder 1 Twin. I be fine with a multiFX pedal as
well. I'm just not very familiar with them, and was asking for an
opinion that uses these. I know that I can go to Guitar Center, and try
out all the pedals myself, but there are always those pedals that are
OOP, which blow the new ones away.

Thanks,

Try out the little Vox DA-5 or another in that series. Jim recommended
a Vox FX unit (Tonelab?) as front end to another amp, which would be
good, but not so portable. (I've also got a Vox Tonelab, and it's very
cool, but not as 'quick' as you might want for plug-n-play.) The DA5
has some of the same sounds, and it's cheap, so you don't have to
worry about depreciation. Turn it on, twist the presets dial.

Plus, the DA5 can be battery powered, so you could take it outside
when you want. Your comment about writing songs made me think of
that, since I like the sounds, and they've inspired a couple tunes.

The Vox VT-15 and VT-30 are the latest from VOX. They're spectacular
and they even use a real tube in the preamp section. And they are
cheap - the VT-15 is what - $250 or $300? That's a spectacular, great
price for what you get. The key is that you are getting a lot /for the
money/.

I have one and it is spectacular for the price. My favourite amp is a
$1000 H&K EL84 tube amp. But I paid a lot of money to get that special
tone and it has no effect except reverb. But the $300 VOX VT-30 is the
best amp I know with effects. And you wont waste a lot of money. It's
a very loud amp. You don't really need more, even for a small gig. Or
anywhere with a mic and PA.

Avoid the AT and AD series - they're earlier models and don't sound as
good.

Very true. The Vox AD series is worthless now that the new VT series
is out...

Exactly. I know I am harping it but check out those VT-15 and VT-30
amps from vox.

From there you are looking at basic tube amp and pedals (and spending
3 to 5x as much as you would on a VT-30)
