1957 Les Paul "Black Beauty" - Lefty model sells for $247K - LULU - 6-:24 -0-09-20

X-No-Archive: yes

This might be the highest price ever paid at auction for a "non-
celebrity" guitar. Only 283 Gibson's of this model were produced in
1957, and very few were left-handed instruments. Gibson's 57, Custom
Re-issue, currently in production, can be purchased in a lefty
configuration for @ $5K. Dr. Barry bought himself a nice guitar and
his estate acquired a valuble investment at his passing.

Enjoy,

It made me think of an acquaintance of mine in the UK. He was a performer,
and ran a small business in PA construction and hire, and high quality
vintage guitars. He had an black LP from the early period when Gibson were
documented as only producing goldtops. I had a close look at it, and the
chips in the finish certainly didn't show any sign that it was a refinish.
This was a few years ago, so the information superhighway may have yielded
more info on early unusual Gibsons , but assuming that "black goldtops" are
still supposedly non-existent or very rare, I wonder how much it would be
worth. He also had a 1930s 00 size all-koa Martin that left the factory as
mahogany. He reckoned that was also worth significant $.

When the LPCs go collecter status, the bubble is a bust. :-) M

What is really rare is the 3 knobs ...

The three pickup, 1957, Les Paul Custom (there are two pickup Custom
models also) was typically wired with a standard, three position
pickup selector switch. The 3 positions were wired: [neck] ~ [middle
(out of phase)+bridge] ~ [bridge]. Both the neck and bridge pickups
were wired to individual tone and volume pots. The middle pickup had
no tone stack and went straight to the pickup selector. If you
disassemble a number of Customs, you will see several variations on
this standard wiring schematic. Some may have been custom wired by
Gibson but, most are after purchase mods. I suspect that this
particular Custom has three independent volume controls and no tone
pots. I cannot find any information from Gibson or other sources to
validate this assumption. It's unlikely that any of the pots are push/
pull switches given the time-frame of the instrument's manufacture.
The 3 pot configuration is a rarity indeed.

Who bought it?

I don't know who purchased the guitar. The auction house website did
not make such info public. I guess that it would be sort of like a
yellow-pages directory for theives if they listed buyers?

Here's some additional photos from artfact.com. It looks like there
are three volume pots in a row and a master tone pot in the positon
normally occupied by the pickup selector switch. I've seen this
configuration a couple times before. It's a fairly rare, from the
factory, wiring schematic. I have also seen this set-up once on a
three pickup Explorer. Interesting instrument.

I've never seen that configuration. Ace started using a 3 pup delux in
75 but I've never took notice of anything unusual on his.
