cool GAS score - V-Stack Tweedy - Daniel Dreibelbis - 6-:24 -0-09-20

there's a sale event going at Long & McQuades, and one of the cool
things going on is that they're clearing out a lot of slow-moving and
used pedals.

I went there to see if I could get a Digitech Brian May pedal at a
good price - alas, the one they had was defective. But I figured I was
there, I might as well try what was there on the table......

well, there was this one pedal with a "made In Canada" on it - a small
rugged-looking metal box that said "V-Stack" on it, and in smaller
letters "Tweedy". Four knobs, a stomp button, no battery cover and no
AC adaptor port.

Still, it was intiguing. So I picked up a Highway 1 Strat, plugged it
into the clean channel of a Fender Blues Deluxe....

and was really blown away by the sound. Beautifully warm, buttery
distortion, and incredibly dynamic. Seriously, I've never run into any
distortion or overdrive, save the natural ones from a good tube amp,
that sounded as good and dynamic as this. Not only that, it actually
responded well to turning down the guitar's volume, cleaned up nicely.
And it also has little to no hiss. I must have played with the thing
for 45 minutes before I finally stopped, but not before trying out
every pickup combo on that Strat.

A few hours later I got to the store with my Bad Monkey and traded it
towards this (even funnier, the guy behind me saw what I was trading
and immediately asked the sales dude to try it out!). So I walked out
with my first boutique pedal.

I've played with it for a week now, and I'm still blown away - whether
in the clean channel of my Classic 50, or into the RP-250 (running
through a Twin Reverb emulation). But my curiousity got to me, and I
did a Google search.....

well, a guy named Steve Webster did this pedal, and it's supposed to
be an all-analogue emulation of a '57 Fender Deluxe. In fact, he
designed the thing to plug directly into a full-range keyboard amp, PA,
or even straight into a computer. IIRC, he was aiming with this pedal
to get some of Neil Young's Crazy Horse madness. I think he succeeded -
the bass knob even allows for that "flubby" sound a Deluxe has ;) .
It's also supposed to last up to 500 hours on one 9V battery!

but what's even more interesting - he did twp more pedals, one that
emulates a Marshall, and another designed to sound like Brian May's
treble booster into an AC30 sound.

he also seems to have disappeared after signing a deal with First Act,
which re-issued the pedals with their name on it, as well as using the
tech in some amps and a few guitars (the VW guitar used in their sales
promotion uses some of that tech).

Anyone else here has a V-stack?
