Wow dude.. who's the singer tho? :p
I think he's a little overmixed, no offense but he's way on top of the
band.

just sharing some music we did (I'm just the rhythm player) - Squier - 6-:23 -0-09-20
|

Just sharing another song I'm playing on:
http://Squier.fileave.com/songs/Doobie_cover.mp3
Me --> Fender Stratocaster (Dimarzio Area 61 middle pup being used)
--> Barber Tone Press (about 50% blend) -> Delay pedal (set for slight
delay to mimic a reverb sound) -> Fender Prosonic head (set on drive channel
with gain 1 set around 3 and gain 2 turned down and Master around 5 -
tone controls kinda neutral - slight mid scoop --> 2x12 Open backed
cab with Celestion G12H30 (75hz cone) Anniversary speakers.
They mic'd up my cab with 2 Shure 57's (they put one mic in front
of left speaker and the other one at the edge of the right speaker).
I really don't pay that much attention any more about
the recording stuff. The techs there just go about what they
do and I just play like I always do. That's up to them whatever
they do. I used to ask all sorts of questions but now I just play.
We did the song 3 times and this was the second take.
I think the singer does too much 'whoa.. and whooo's' but I'm
the new comer so he's been singing that way for years apparently.
besides, the band leader and him are friends. So I just play.
We rehearsed this song in a previous rehearsal and so he recorded
it and then deemed it was ready to rotate into the song/set list we do.
Ok well. that's enough gear info for what I use.
This is the weekend warrior
band. No horns on this song obviously. (they weren't at rehearsal for this
session - that's up to the band leader - so we did songs that don't need
horns).
Rhythm guitar (me), lead guitarist (who also plays a Strat but he
has those blade type single coil sized humbuckers and uses a Fender
Twin with pedals), drums (Tama set in the room), keyboard (Yamaha), and
the overly whoo hoo singer. (he's actually a cool guy - nice person).
They recorded the song so we all were given a copy of it
(so we could all get a better handle of how we actually sound and
improve on it or whatever). The band leader (keyboard player)
regularly takes us down the hall to record a new song or two
he wants to fit into the song list just so we
can hear ourselves as a band and then he critiques it etc.
Our rehearsal space is in the same complex as the recording studio
down the hall so it's easy for him to book the time and we just go
down the hall and record the stuff.
Anyways, that's me on rhythm guitar and so I'm not going to wow
anyone here with feats of technical playing wizardry and jaw
dropping tour de force lead playing but that's what we sound like.
Hey, it's a regular weekend gig and I enjoy playing. The song is
China Grove (Doobie Brothers) and that's our cover of it.
I'm not sure about the legality of me putting it up for others to
listen to but all the places we play do pay some sort of fee so
there is never a problem with us playing covers. Our band leader has
been doing this for a long time and he's a straight shooter and all
that.
Ok. well. I like playing rhythm guitar and I actuall learn
a lot from the rest of the band members that have been doing
this for many years. They are older but really nice people
although the band leader can be a dick head sometimes.

yeah. I think so too. But that's all up to the band leader
and him - so ?????? We'll probably do a better recording
of this some other time. We only did 3 takes and on one of
the takes they added in a lot of post reverb to me which I
thought sounded really bad. But this mix doesn't have it in there (yeah!)
For whatever reason they really bumped up the vocals way
out front in this one. Who knows why. I don't think it
actually is like that when we play live - not that much anyways.
I dunno - like I said the singer and our band leader (keyboard player)
have been buddies and doing this for a long time so I just play
and have fun with it. I'll add in suggestions or whatever when I'm asked to
and I did mention about the vocals way too bumped up and they just
said they can always back it down when it's remixed.
So probably to them it's just a rushed rough cut and they'll
sort it out better later or get over to the studio and have it
mixed down again. Not sure really.
Ah well - It's all a good time for me
(and it pays too so it's a cool part time job).
Let the old timers in that band do what they want with the recording stuff.
Hey - I replied to you on your "New Track up on Soundclick (for all my fans)"

well I also forgot to mention that since the 2 horn players weren't
there they would normally be doing backup vocals on that song so
maybe it would have sounded better if they were there adding to
the vocal mix (????) Dunno really. But that's the way we normally
do it when we play and everyone is there.

Now there's a band to behold. I was playing a little "Listen to the
music" today on the acoustic.
Not bad at all, bit too much reverb/delay would be my only real
criticism. Particularly on the vocals, besides the fact that they are
too loud. I'd prefer it a bit more raw, I think a Tele and a Tube
Screamer straight in..... Mmmmm.... I might try and get that on our set
list. ;-)
Nice playing tho Squier, well done.

FWIW it didn't grate so much after the first 30 seconds or so. It's
actually quite good. Has a nice live vibe to it while still keeping
production quality. It's a good take on the original.

You sound fine. The rhythm section is great.

I heard this is why black sabbath broke up in '83. Dio snuck into the
studio late at night to bump up the vox on the mix.
Rumor has it he got caught by Tony, who snuck into the studio late at
night to... well, that's another story :)

Lol of course. I'm still studying Hideaway but the tabs I have are for
the freddie king version so I am at a bit of a loss; i'm playing the
clapton version but I don't really know where he played or what he
played (other than by ear) so it's slow going. I can't find tabs for
it either so it looks like i'll have to end up buying a book :/

Singer has a bit of a Michael Bolton/Meatloaf quality to him. Not a
criticism - just an observation is all.
Nive job on the rhythm, Squier! Which delay pedal did you use? I
have a DD-6, and, when we play that tune, I'll actually set it to an
echo effect to get a 3-4 descending repeat. That said, your set up is
far better sounding than a standard reverb out of the amp. Very good
timing during the silent parts - it's very easy to screw up the
cadence and you held the line very well. Nice job.

Oh no you don't Squier!! You can't hide behind the ol' I'm just the
rhythm guy with this number. This song is, and always has been, about
the rhythm guitar. I remember that opening riff from high school
dances. It has to be perfect for this one to work. You're almost
there. Nice tone but, you gotta tighten up a couple spots. Not just
you either & I'm sure you know where they are. I don't even want to
talk about the singer. He is what he is. Maybe he does other stuff
better??
One other thing. Be careful what you say around here about bandmates
unless you don't care that it's etched in stone. I've been tempted to
say stuff that I know I'd regret later.
thanks for posting,
tony

Wow! Fantastic!
Others have pointed out potential flaws in the *mix*, so I won't go
there.
You're playing is good, and your sound fits the song to a "T".
Unlike others, I like what the lead singer is doing. I'm not sure
whether people are reacting negatively because of the excessive volume
or the effects, but if I strip that stuff out, I'm left with a guy who
sings better than 90% of what I've heard on here (myself included,
natch).
If you guys are routinely sounding that good *and* having fun in the
process, I'm extremely envious! One of these days, I'm going to have to
twist your arm and get you to reveal where you're at so I can go see you
in person!

FWIW, Tom Johnston (sp?) back in the day played that signature lick live
with an SG and a Twin Reverb ... two actually ... and I'm not sure if he
used a distortion pedal, but he did use an echoplex. Man, what a great band
that was! Squier, you did well ... just a suggestion ... let the drummer
worry about the time on those breaks, that way you all land together, if you
know what I mean.
