I'm a Penn State fan by marriage (my wife is from PA). The team
definitely looks good this year, but Joe Paterno looks awful. Last
year when he was coaching from the booth, I was wondering if he was
even still alive. It looked like someone just propped him up in a
chair and put the headset on him. The whole thing reminded me of
"Weekend at Bernie's".

He's gotten old*. Shrug. He's been there since 1966, living in the same
small house on McKee street (I lived on that small street for awhile).
Focus on the team.
We live in a world where _the_ only illusion that keeps most people
thinking they still live in the same country it was in 2000, 1990, 1980,
1970 etc. is a flag. The money in our wallets looks like counterfeit
from Egypt just to _beat_ the counterfeiters. ;-).
You, me and everyone else deludes ourselves that we're the same human
being that looked back at us in 1966 or 2005.
I don't kid myself that the Penn State I graduated from doesn't remotely
resemble the one I lived at in the mid 1970's. Same with every other
college, H.S., old home town etc. It's why I'm not a "reunion" type.
Fuck that noise. I reunion with my own memories and that's enough.
Change is life, but the memories we "conserve" between our own ears are
too.
P.S. I'm for the school not as much because I'm an alum, but because I
know from personal experience with him (he was also the Athletic
Director when I was an student athlete there), that character and your
education are #1, the sport/business, #2. Try and say that about
any/every other NCAA Div I school...when Joe Paterno retires or dies,
PSU will _enormous_ shoes to fill in the integrity department.
* Old that.

I think geographic poximity to a team is about *the* lamest rationale
for "fandom" there is...it's also the most prevalent. Shallowness is
legion in the "fan" realm. Your wife once lived in the state- and she's
a fan? You are married to someone who once lived in the state...and
you're a fan of the state university's football team? SO many humans are
...odd. It's why I think war is unlikely to completely disappear until
humans evolve...and that requires geological measures of time... M

Who cares, it is BASEBALL SEASON dude.
You got the College World Series on, (has Penn St ever made it?), and
the All Star break coming up soon.
There will be time enough for football in a couple of months.
Let it rest, otherwise you risk it being horribly over exposed.
Oh wait, it already is. Carry on. :-)

Geographic proximity has it's benefits - being able to attend games
rather than just watch them, being able to meet the players, etc.

Well, since you brought up human evolution - look at it this way:
sports are basically just a modern substitute for tribal warfare. They
allow us to vent our primal agression and lust for conquest in a
harmless way. It's tribe vs. tribe, us vs. them. In this light, why
*NOT* root for your home team? Unless you can provide DNA evidence
that you've evolved beyond the rest of us, you're fooling youself.
Also, the "fan by marriage" remark was partially a joke, but there
*IS* some truth to it. I never watched college games until I met Judy.
She got me to watch PSU. But I continue to follow them because of
Paterno. Sure, I joke about his advanced age, but I have enormous
respect for his coaching skills, and (as you said) his integrity.

I couldn't care less to get stuck in a mob, traffic, drunks, missing a
ton o game just going for a piss. And...meet the players? WHY would
anyone want to do that?!

I'm for the best team, coached by the best coach. Past that, I couldn't
give a fat baby's dick.

She didn't go to PSU but has a thing for the team? I don't get it, but
it's her/your trip man, rock on.

If you call that "football". Penn State couldn't survive an SEC
schedule.
