FWIW... apparently "Esteban" lied about learning from Segovia, and has
lied about nearly everything else. Here's just one quote I pulled from
a massive number of hits on "esteban fraud".

Just check out some of the quotes from the harmony central reviews of
esteban guitars. Believe me when I say the list included in this post
is a very small sample of what people have said. Please, do, go look
it up on harmony central, check the reviews for all the models.
Several people who have been playing some for 20 years, 30 years, one
for 50 years, give their opinions of this instrument. Fair warning
though, it isn't pretty.

"This guitar is not well made.
The neck is warped. The wood is green. I lit mine on fire, and after
the paper-think laquer finish burned off, it went out because the wood
was still wet."

"So close to garbage you can hardly tell the difference."

"I was told that it was SUPPOSED to be handmade in a workshop in
AMERICA. It said made in China. ...when I got it, the pickguard was
already scratched up."

"I never even got a note off of this junk toy. The bridge lifted as
soon as I tried to tune it up. "

"The frets are made with barded-wire fence material, make sure you're
up on your Tetanus shots.

"I was a sucker for buying this. I should have known better. You have
been warned. DO NOT BUY AN ESTEBAN PRODUCT OF ANY SORT. You will be
getting ripped off if you do. Please learn from my stupid mistake. "

"The guitar is JUNK! It had to be returned and I can't seem to get a
replacement! Yet alone get a descent guitar!

"When We tried to adjust the action via the truss rod, It maxed out
the rod, leaving the action at about 3/8" at the 12th fret!! What a
pile! This ain't a cello gang. I guess Your supposed to take it to The
local luthier to have the nut and saddle shaped, after the neck
reset...."

"Neck was twisting and warping, frets were starting to fall out, and
tuners pung like mad and ate strings. (Pung being past tense of ping).
Also, when the glue holding the body together failed, the thin plastic
binding was the only thing holding it together. I give it another day
before it finally conks out. "

"The guitar and package lasted about 3 hours whereas it was packaged
back up and dropped off at the local UPS pick-up to be sent back to
HSN for a refund. Since the guitar was junk and the DVD's appeared to
be used and scratched...........I opted to have nothing more to do
with this.

"The "truss rod" seems to be scrap metal from a cheap plumbing place.
The acti0on at the nut was probably 1/4" and at the 12th fret about
7/8"....I though of using this POS as a stand up or wastub style bass!
Bridge? No bridge, really, jjst a chunk of uncompensated plastic to
run the crappy strings over...but that glue? In three days, the
"bridge lifted and shifted....kind of like a gyroscope...never in the
same place! Tuners? I guess a vice grip might fix them, but that
crappy foil over pot metal (maybe they call it custom chrome?) set of
tuners won;t hold a tune...not even a half note! The frets stick out
about 1/2" from the sloppy fretboard and cut you to shreds (kind of a
new term for "shredding"!) and the finish comes off on your hands,
arms, everywhere!

"Do NOT buy one of these cheap guitars off the internets or TV.
My wife did, even though I told her not to.
After a frustrating time playing what is pretty much an un-playable
guitar, we went down to the local store and bought her a nice little
Ibanez for 299 that is VERY well made in that price point. "

"I have been playing for 8 years... It sounded like rubber bands on a
cardboard box. The action was so high that even I could hardly play
it, and I am an experienced guitarist and active musician who has
unusually large hands. Really though, just because it has six strings
does not mean it actually sounds like a guitar.
I would prefer not to go there, but I will say that this thing is
probably a bio-hazard of some type as far as the finish. The fretboard
appears to be junkwood covered with black die which rubs off on your
hands as you play.
Hardware is horrible. Tuners slip. Does not hold a tune. It appears to
be assembled with common wood glue and on the one I used the bridge
was ready to pop of (lifting severely). The frets can hurt you, as in
make you bleed due to their sharpness. Actually playing this in front
of people would be about as good an idea as walking into a pre-school
wearing plastic rap (at least that's what its owner told me, and I
agree). "

The Esteban guitars are quite literally some of the worst guitars made
within the last 20 years, even below the instruments sold by Wal-Mart
and other mass-market stores. While I have nothing but praise for the
skill level Esteban has achieved, he unfortunately uses that same
talent to deceive people into buying his "custom-handmade" guitars.
The guitar will suffice for a beginner, but one must be aware that it
has a very limited life span and does not give an accurate feel to
what a "real" guitar may be.

The unfortunate aspect of guitar buying these days is that people buy
them without actually seeing the quality. This is where your local
music store (whether large or small) really is a good way to go.
National brands have gained reputations that speak for the quality of
the instrument, and Esteban guitars have definately given themselves a
reputation as well. With no words intended against your father, this
is one gift that can stand by the motto "It's the thought that
counts." Please don't let this guitar spoil your thoughts on guitars
in general.

Thanks,
Brad"

Oh man, now if that kid had offered me a fine NEW Esteban collector guitar
like this one and the lizard I would have gone for it. LMAO.
Seriously though. I find it hard to believe anyone that had been playing
guitar for between 10 and 50 years (as noted from the Harmony Central
reviews) would fall for Esteban's schpeel or even consider that a guitar
package of it's size/price would not be a joke. It does not take a genius to
see it's a piece of junk just from the TV commercial.
I can see little kids talking mom into purchasing but that's about it.

In an after-gig conversation with one of the patrons of the club we were in,
I asked this guy if he played. This was *not* a kid. He told me he'd just
gotten a guitar recently ... an Esteban. I wasn't sure if he was pulling my
leg, but just in case he wasn't, I didn't laugh or say anything I could have
said, but just asked him how he liked it. Seems he was pretty happy with
it, but he really was just beginning. I'm sure I'll see him again, so it'll
be interesting to hear how things go.

If I owned a guitar like that I'd film myself breaking it over someone's
head and post it on YouTube.

I agree about the original being better, but I wanted a short clip that
got right to the punchline.

Old cartoons like that were long before my time, but they really were
the best. I doubt many of those types of characters and plots would sit
well with thin-skinned critics of today. Do you remember those old
reruns of Speedy Gonzales that portrayed Mexican rodents as lazy
drunkards? Too politically incorrect but very funny....hiccup, hiccup,
zzzzzzzzzzzz. ;-)
