Correct fingering for soloing? - RK - 6-:21 -0-09-20

Is there any sites that explains the most useful way to finger solo runs. I
mean is it best to use all 4 fingers in succession or is it a matter of
personal taste?

I'm sure there are not. Every example would be different.

No! Your fingers would get twisted in knots if you tried that. The
fingers are used in all possible sequences.

Generally, when you're in one position, you use one finger per fret...
but there are many exceptions.

No, it's a matter of efficiency and economy of motion.

- get a book of scales. It will show you the fingerings;

- get a book of transcriptions. It will show you the fingerings;

- watch your favorite players, live or on video;

- take some lessons so an experienced player can show you some
examples.

Yeah, it's a matter of hand size, personal taste.

I use all four and learned every scale I know, 3 notes / string.

It's horses for courses. You wouldn't use all four fingers in succession if
you were alternating between the 5th and 7th frets, for instance - you'd
probably use fingers 1 and 3 only. Basically, you use the fingers that
logically correspond with the notes that you are playing and want to play
next.

I'd usually use one finger per fret, so if I was in the 5th position then
fret 5 is 1st finger, 6 is 2nd, 7 is 3rd, and the 8th fret is the 4th
finger. Depending on what I'm playing, I use my pinky on the 9th fret too
and sometimes use my 2nd finger on the 7th fret, especially when changing
from my 3rd finger on the 7th fret on a different string. It works for me.

Something else I do is always change to a different finger if possible
rather than move up or down the fretboard using the same finger (unless
sliding, of course). Sometimes I used to jump down two frets at the bottom
of a pentatonic-based scale, eg from A to G on the 6th string, using my 1st
finger. Now, even though my first finger has been on the 5th fret for all
of the other strings, I'll play the A with my 2nd finger if I'm going to
proceed down to G. I'll stay on my 1st finger if I'm not. If I go down to
the G, the A can sustain longer now because my 2nd finger is still on it
while my 1st finger is on its way to the G.

When jumping up the fretboard (ie higher notes), it's best to go from your
4th or 3rd finger, leapfrog over where you were playing, and resume with
your 1st or 2nd finger in the higher position. The opposite applies when
heading down the fretboard. Whether that's set in stone depends on what is
being played.

You can also "inch worm" your way up or down, where you reach with your 3rd
or 4th finger and then the 1st finger comes up to almost meet it. The
following Em pentatonic scale with flattened V passing note will show what I
mean. It ascends from open 6th string to 12th fret on the 1st string, and
I've shown it as string/fret/finger:

6/0/0, 6/3/1, 6/5/2, 6/6/3, 6/7/4, 5/5/1, 5/7/3, 4/5/1, 4/7/2, 4/8/3, 4/9/4,
3/7/1, 3/9/3, 2/8/1, 2/10/2, 2/11/3, 2/12/4, 1/10/1, 1/12/3.

This tab might look nice in a non-proportional font. If it looks like crap,
copy it and paste it into Notepad or summit like that.

E|--------------------------------------10-12-|
B|---------------------------8-10-11-12-------|
G|-----------------------7-9------------------|
D|---------------5-7-8-9----------------------|
A|-----------5-7------------------------------|
E|-0-3-5-6-7----------------------------------|

Play it as triplets, and stick with the fingering above. If you sit
watching something educational like South Park and just go up and down the
scale over and over and over, your arm, hand and fingers will get used to
the idea

Does any of that answer your question?

The correct answer will have many forms. This is but one. It all depends
on what you want to do, how you want to go about it, what your physiology
dictates, and a bunch of other things too.

I hope some of this has been helpful.

Personal taste - some times across all 6, sometime 1 string ( or
inbetween the 2) - depends on what your doing. Learn it as many ways
as possible and then see what works best for the situation. ed s.

What is appropriate is affected by the tune, by what you just played, and by
what you're about to play.

The fingering is chosen based on what gets you smoothly and efficiently from
the last phrase to the next, without stumbling.

Yes, this means that you have to practice the fingerings, and also practice
thinking about what you just did and what you're going to do next.

In taking the time to read and absorb all of this, I think this was a
pretty impressive basic description and instruction, Lawrence. Nicely
