I posted a while ago about getting a ridiculous amount of his from the
clean channel of my Boogie Studio Cal. So I finally had the time today
to dick with it. I opened my little stash of 12ax7's, and found quite
a mix; some Sovteks, some Boogies (I guess they were the originals)
and some JJ. Again, I know nothing about this shit; just trying to fix
a problem. So I removed my preamp tubes one at a time and tried each
of the 8 tubes I had sitting around. Bingo on #1... I just happened to
put one of the JJ's (whatever the fuck they are) in slot #1 and the
hiss was gone. So I figured I'd use that as a guage to figure out if
any of the other tubes were any good. I wound up junking all but the 2
Sovteks, and the 2 JJ's. Added bonus.. it increased the output of the
clean channel a bit so it now is at a more even level with the OD
channel.
All is well in Boogie town now. Plus I ripped apart my old Ibanez
"slide only" guitar, and stuck the guts into another old Ibanez
(identical to the first... I had bought one for my nephew in 1982 when
I bought mine. He never played it ... at all, so he gave it to me a
month ago). Did a thorough setup and I now have a very killer
FrankenStrat that needs only new tuners. I could be wrong but I sorta
remember putting a VV in the bridge and the neck, and a VV blues in
the middle; since I like using the middle pickup with the bridge and/
or neck ones, it gets a little nastier tone.
Writing some new stuff, and I guess the new guitar will get a workout
on it... I'll post when I stop fucking around and get serious again.
Play pretty...
