Making and Bleaching Acoustic Saddle - Bob Dean - 6-:21 -0-09-20

I obtained a deer horn and fashioned a saddle to
replace the plastic saddle. It improved the tone
and sustain. I didn't like the dark color so, I
decided to bleach the the saddle with a household
bleach - BIG MISTAKE! This turned the saddle to
powder.
So, any ideas as to how to light'n the part?

Regards,
Bob

...heh...we used to soak things like bone in vinegar so they would burn
out for lost wax type casting...not surprised bleach might do something
similar.

Try whitening toothpaste - or the whitening strips. Try on a scrap
chunk first.

I'm guessing that stag antler contains a lot more protein than bone attacked
by the sodium hypochlorite. Use an oxygen-based bleach. like hydrogen
peroxide or napisan? I've use both at work, the action isn't as strong as
chlorine-based bleach, but it might work. If it was me, I would probably
leave the discoloured look, just to show it wasn't bleached bone. In fact,
I've boiled bone pins in tea to age them.

I tried hydrogen peroxide without much success. Maybe not enough
time.

Ah, it had to happen: "relic" bridge pins.

Yeah, it is relicing, though I hadn't thought of it that way. The idea has
been around a long time, and the discolouration of fossil ivory must be part
of its attraction.
