OT: Sabbath Tribute - Monster Zero - 6-:19 -0-09-20
|
|
Well I'm having my annual itch to get a Sabbath Tribute going (posting the
ads) and was expecting the SOS when all of the sudden I get swamped with
responses!
The drummer I have been trying this with is a tremendous drummer and does
the Bill Ward stuff excellent..We have been trying to get this going off and
on for over 5 years and it "was" the same thing every time..no bass
prospects and nutso loser wannabe Ozzy prospects.
Well the folks I've talked with thus far are very good prospects. One bass
player lives very close by and is very familiar with Ozzy era Sabbath (which
is what we are shooting for) and the most solid Ozzy prospect is the former
singer of another Ozzy era Sabbath Tribute that disbanded a few years ago
and he's "Yearned for a new one" since.
I'm cautiously optimistic but I feel for the first time in a long time that
it's gonna happen. We have 5 bass auditions to do and 2 singer auditions
over the next 2 weeks. I know it sounds silly and all but I've felt for many
years that this is my musical calling or at least 80% of it. With Tony being
my main influence in my playing, doing his stuff just comes natural to me
and doesn't feel contrived at all.
Guess I'm going to have to re-visit the Iommi SG GAS. Oh what a shame huh?

GC's 12mo no interest is running out end-of-June... mine's
sitting there available, empty. Sorely tempted to do the same
thing... I've only got *one* SG, so it's OK, right?
Now you need a name... tribute bands often take a name
from a song. How about NIB? Just obscure enough...
and a play on NIN.
I've been tempted to start a ZZTop tribute band... we cover more
of their songs than any other, and are always ready to add more.
It's certainly easier to sing than LedZep, another tribute-band target,
although I'd really like to do a whole LZ album side as a tribute set.

SG's "should" be owned in pairs. :-)
Funny you mentioned the name thing AND the ZZ Top thing. We have the name
narrowed down to these..
The Writ
Red Sun Rising
Cockrels Cry
Volume 4
Live Evil
NIB
Megalomania
The Sabtones (yuck)
Haven't checked if any are taken yet but I don't really c are if they are.
On the ZZ Top thing..myself and a bassist friend thought of doing a ZZ
Top/Nirvana Tribute band called La Grunge. I shit you not!

Heh...I've only got one as well -- a '66. Got it real cheap ($300)
because the emo punker kid who had it before me decided to paint it
black, relatively crappy paint job, and the headstock had, errrr,
issues, as did the fretboard. I sunk almost another $300 into getting
it fixed up, put a couple of treble bleed caps on the volume controls.
Now it's the best playing and one of the sweetest sounding guitars I
own.
My son, who does recording/production, is pretty tight with all the
local 18-25-year-old-staffed bands and there's a lot of good stuff that
those types want to sell cheap, for whatever reason. I got a '79 Ric
4001 bass the same way -- the kid's always got his eyes open for stuff
he thinks I'd like. If you know anyone around that age in the local
music scene, maybe he could turn you on to some good deals.

There was one around here. It SuuUUUUuuUUUUUuuucked, but they
did very well with it. Lead player is a nice guy ( and good player),
too, but the other two just weren't up to it. Then again, I have
a pretty good grasp on what Dusty Hill actually does. Bad ZZTop
verges on sacrilege to me. "Hear that? That's a shuffle. Play
it right or go home." We play LaGrange now, and I keep
beatin' on the lead player to hit that C on the G string
in the intro.
There's a lot of potential - *if you will do the beards and
fur-on-the-explorer thing*.

Heh. There one of those here, too. They were trolling for a sub bass
player on call. Ad specified the bass to be used, the amp to be used,
the clothing, and even where the right sort of wig was to be
purchased. I didn't even send an email.
I think the SCA people call 'em "period <deleted>*." Me? I'm a
"music extremist".
*in the sense of the soup <deleted> from Seinfeld, by way of a
disclaimer. And anybody gets any ideas about hashing this text,
you *WILL* pay for it.

Here's a few ideas just off the top of me head:
The Country Girls
The Paranoid Wizards
Fairies in Boots
The Back Street Boys.. err, Kids!
The National Acrobats
The Dirty Women
The Strippers (and everyone has a stage name with "Jack" in it
somewhere)
I know, I know, so many good ideas... take your pick :)

Sabbath cover bands are wonderful as long as you don't try to put your
stamp on the music. There is nothing worse than someone who thinks
he/she can add something better to that which is all ready remarkable.
When you pick a bass player, make sure you tell him/her to stick to the
music. I've seen a lot of bass players feel absolutely compelled to try
to throw in a bunch of extra notes for some reason. I think it's a form
of 'second-fiddle' syndrome. As far as the singer is concerned, I would
make him keep the fake English accent between songs. There is nothing
worse than some guy pulling off the Ozzy sound and then sounding like
someone from New Jersey when announcing the next song. Cracks me up and
destroys the illusion, if you know what I mean.
I noticed someone had posted a list of possible band names. Of those
listed, I like Volume 4 best. But I would choose Supernaut if it were my
band. ;-)
Good luck. Please post a song when you get things rolling. I like
listening to different Sabbath cover bands and would suggest you do the
same. It never hurts to hear what other people are doing. There is a
really good band called War Pigs up in Connecticut.
