1952 Les Paul "Goldtop" - LULU - 6-:19 -0-09-20

X-No-Archive: yes

The Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix, AZ, recently purchased a 1952
Les Paul "Goldtop" for their collection. The Arizona Republic ran a
story about the museum's purchase in the newspaper's 6-19-09 edition,
complete with a photo of an example of the Goldtop model acquired.
The newpaper's website ran the article as well but, without the
accompanying photo. Here's the article, as well as, some additional
sites that include photos of the 1952 Gibson model. There's also a
YouTube video clip from Antiques Roadshow that shows an individual's
pawnshop Goldtop find.

Enjoy,
Lulu : )

I was offered one of those '52s when I was a kid starting out, for $100 or
so (might have been $125, I don't remember which) and I passed. The thing
weighed a ton and the under-tailpiece bridge was hateful to play. I suppose
if I'd bought it I'd be happy now, but probably I'd have "fixed" the bridge
anyway, and it would be worthless. Funny how it goes, eh?

I once passed on one of those ( probably not one of the Majik first ones ) :^)
sitting in a barrel in the basement of the old downtown DC Chuck Levin's
for $80 because it was a total piece of shit.

Actually, I know you aren't answering me, but if I gave the impression I'm
pissed, I gave the wrong impression. I was pretty much saying I'm not
pissed, it wasn't a very good guitar (for me, anyway), and I'd have wrecked
it trying to make it into a good guitar, thus messing up the chance for
someone to make entirely too much money selling it. ;-)

Not really. I've passed on better deals than that over the years
that I'd be more "pissed" over if I was inclined. I *got* enough
good deals over the years to not worry about the ones I didn't do.

If I'm pissed at all, its over the ones that got stolen like
P-Bass #0374. Yeah, that one I'm still irked over.

Was there anything left after?

I *really* liked Mrs Levin.

She always treated us kids like we were rock stars.

It was a killer store.

I bought my first Leslie from the downtown location.
When I was in highschool, our whole band went down
there; I copped a Leslie (to go with my L-100) and
our lead guitarist bought a Tennesseean and a Vox
AC-30. Our bassist had a Gibson bass amp - a
G-100 or somesuch; two cabinets and a big head.
His old man owned a music store out in the burbs,
so he got his shit free - but Chuck's prices were
cheaper than the "good buddy" deal his old man
offered us, so we went downtown, H street, as I recall.
(Been a helluva long time.)

So - you must remember some of the local bands
from that era - Crank, GodMotherCountry, Natty Bumpo,
Hilo Hammett? And Uncle Truck, the house band at
Jamf down on M street. (That was me.) We jammed
with Gil Scot Heron a couple of times. (Gil just did
a gig here in Denver at Cervantes Ballroom - hell, I
thought he was out of it for good, but he appears to
be back...) Shit, DC had some good music back then,
but all the good ones split - there were always hordes
of poser bands; good threads, good gear, shiny
new vehicles - those dudes had rich parents...lobbyists,
corporate bigwigs, senators, congressmen. They'd
go downtown and work for nothing so they could
hustle chicks, made it tough for the real cats to eat.

It probably hasn't changed. ;-)

>It was a killer store.

I *seriously* stressed her patience over D130 warranty.

I bought one of the first blackface Showmans with a single
in the tone ring because I couldn't afford the Dual.

First night out the thing decided it didn't care for my
bass playing and went on a silent protest after about
10 minutes. OK. had another amp. Back to Chucks, blown
speaker. Repeat a couple of times over the next couple
of weeks and finally a *D140* magically appeared and
no more problems. I dont think the 140 was even available
when I first got it. She sailed through it all with a
smile although I could tell she thought I was abusing
the thing. Hey, if it's not supposed to go to 10, why
is there a 10 on the little dials?

>(Been a helluva long time.)

I left DC in Dec, 1967 and have only been back twice
so that's probably good enough.

>So - you must remember some of the local bands
>from that era - Crank, GodMotherCountry, Natty Bumpo,
>Hilo Hammett? And Uncle Truck, the house band at
>Jamf down on M street. (That was me.)

What year?

I grew up in Arlington and played a bunch of M Street
places at different times. I even wound up living over
The Crazy Horse for a few months at one point.

I saw Natty Bumpo open up for Jimi at the Ambassador
a couple of times but I don't recall the others.

> Shit, DC had some good music back then,

Yeah. Link Wray, Roy B, tons more.

Roy used to play Saturday matinees at the Silver Dollar
on M street that were for all ages so for a while I'd bus
in from the burbs to watch him face the back of the stage
when he saw other guitards in the room. Some friends
of mine took lessons from him and got instantly amazingly
better after a few lessons and a few months of practice.
Since I was playing bass at the time it never occurred to
me that I, too, might benefit from a few lessons... Oh well.

>It probably hasn't changed. ;-)

I was back there a couple years ago and after living
out West for 30 years what struck me was how *tiny*
everything in Georgetown is...
