EL84 adapters? - Tony Done - 6-:20 -0-09-20
|
|
Prompted by Renli's recent post.
Has anyone tried then? I was wondering if they would give my Fender Blues
Deluxe a little more "crystalline" quality on the clean, and maybe a sweeter
OD. The power reduction isn't much of an issue one way or the other. This
isn't really any more than thinking in print, because I think it would just
more or less duplicate the H&K Statesman.

I tried a THD "Yellow Jacket" in a THD UniValve amp. Made for some nice
'just breaking up' sounds (sweeter than 6L6) but didn't really care for
the tone otherwise. After a certain point on the dial it was just mush.
The cleans were no longer that clean, so I'm not sure it'd add any
'crystalline' qualities. 6L6GCs will generally be the pick of the bunch
for that :-)
Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks. The Blues Deluxe doesn't hold a candle to the H&K Dual EL84, it
sounds very "gloopy" by comparison, for want of a better word, with a
tendency to emphasise the low mids. I was wondering if just changing the
tubes to EL84, class A, would bring it up to speed. That wouldn't give the
saturated Mesa-like OD that the H&K will, but it would make for a good clean
sound and light preamp OD.

well ok. you can kick me a bit (I'm not trying to be a brat)
but the Blues Deluxe is a pretty good amp for what it does.
If you try to make it something that it's not - it's like
trying to teach a bear to be a penguin. Won't be happening.
My personal suggestion would be not to change power tube types
but to coax that Blues Dlx with a speaker change.
Swap out the stock speaker with WGS Reaper (75 hz) or
Celestion G12H30 Anniversary (also 75hz cone). Either of
these will really open up that amp - it will still sound
like a Blues Deluxe but it will give that little bear a big roar
rather than the little gritty grunt the OEM speaker has to offer.
No need to duplicate the EL84 amp you already have. (imho)
that's just my 2 cents.

That's what I used to think when I used one. The cleans were
great. Quite chimey if you used the right pickups.
My melody maker with the single coil sounded great
for chord stuff.
The only gripe I had was the amp was too clean for much
stuff I play. You have to kick it with some preamps or
pedals to get a good distortion tone if you couldn't crank
the amp up high. And it's pretty loud when cranked.
It was actually quite similar to my super reverb. Had the
same basic type of operation and overall sound/mojo.
Just different speakers, and I don't recall the BD having
tremolo like the SR does.. I forgot.
I sometimes wonder if maybe something isn't quite
right on his, or different tubes, etc.
My SR also has great clean sounds, but like the BD,
also needs to be kicked in the tail to play rawk.
It stays pretty clean unless you really firewall it.
I have to have fx toys to get some raunch going
with that thing.
Clean? Hummm.. think of "Lenny" SRV type tone..
It can fake that pretty well. The BD I used could
probably get pretty close too.
It may have been a newer model, but it pretty much
had the old fender type sound..
But OD.. Not without toys. :/

I would assume it would be similar to putting lipstick on a pig....
I think your H & K is the same as the tube edition 20 and if so is a
fantastic little amp. The Fender is what it is...and not a bad sounding
amp IMO.
If you want something that sounds like a MB them sell the Fender and
put the proceeds towards the purchase of a Mesa.
But then that is just me.

well that's the thing about a lot of Fender amps (not all, but many
especially blackface circuits) they make for great cleans to
slight grit. But those nice cleans make for a great base tone
to run all sorts of pedals onto. And the nice thing is that
those amps 'absorb' pedals and it all melts into the amp so
it sounds more like the amp rather than obvious pedals on top
of an amp (if that makes sense). A lot of people I know use
those clean fenders as 'pedal runners' and then stomp off the
pedals for really nice cleans when needed.
still.. that G12H30 would be one of the best upgrades for that amp. (imho).
I'm so used to Fender amps that I just learn to deal with them
and there are a lot of tones in there if you work a little with it.
(and yeah - you are also able get into cranked up zone with them
to get into that tonal zone of power tube saturation)

Inclined to agree. Then again, a speaker change to something different
might breathe a little more life into the "gloopy" (love it!) BD. It's
a hell of an expensive experiment though :-\
Cheers,
Andy.

Or for example, as the Chinese would say, playing music for cows and
other miscellaneous farm animals.
