Need Help With Something - Wonton Studios - 6-:20 -0-09-20

Hi everyone,

I just bought an amp! Its the one for me. I swear I love this thing...
tone for days! Its a rare amp...I cant see the name of it anywhere on
it... I think its from the 60s. I LOVE this amp..... such high
quality, and the amount of tones I can get with it are ridiculous.!

I was thinking of trading out the speaker in it, maybe for a 2x12
cabinet. Everything I have read suggests I want 200 watt Altec
speakers in it. I dont have a cabinet, but I do have 2 twelve inch
speakers from another amp I have that I ripped 'em out of. SO I was
thinking of taking these 2 speakers and putting them in an isolation
cab that I think I can make from a solid state amp I have. I already
ripped the guts out of the solid state amp when I tried to convert it
to a bass amp, so its already hollow and the speakers should be no
problem to install. Actually I have 2 solid state amps I did this to,
so I am thinking I can take the 2 twelve inch Altecs and spread 'em
out at gigs.

So here's a question: if I take this amp and connect it to two 12"
speakers, can I still use a power brake to get the tone I heard on
Frampton's "Comes Alive" album? THATS what I am looking for, but I am
not a fan of Frampton and his tone is okay, so-so in my opinion.

Now if I get a pedal to give me infinite crunch, can I use a seperate
power supply to individually power the two 12s? All I have read leads
me to believe that if I do this, I should be able to get close to the
tone of Robbie Krieger of The Doors, even though I do *not* want his
tone and am not really a fan.

And lastly, since I like the amp so much, can I take it and build some
sort of power doubler to increase the sound? I am wanting it louder,
but more creamy with longer crunch, and maybe with 2 different
speakers. And maybe different tubes that I have lying around because I
have to figure out a use for them. They were in the preamp of those
two solid state amps, and I am thinking that since everything I read
leads me to believe that preamp distortion is the way I want to go, I
may try to switch these 6L6s for 12AX7As or 7025s. I think this is
what I want, and in fact I may even take run a Zoom pedal into the amp
to preserve its tone. I LOVE my amp... its the one I have always
looked for.. I just want to change the speakers, power section, tubes,
double the power, disengage the speaker thats in it, paint it a
different color, change some caps and resisitors if I can find an
article that will teach me how, and perhaps build a od pedal into the
preamp of the amp controllable from my cell phone.

BUT I LOVE MY AMP... ITS THE ONE FOR ME AND I WILL NEVER SELL WHATS
LEFT OF IT!

Anyone know of a good od pedal that will change its tone to make it
more like something else.. like what I hear on Dokken's "Alone Again".
I dont like that tone, but thats what I'm after.

Thanks everyone.. keep your goddamn comments to yourself 'cause I am
right, but all comments welcome if you think its a good idea or arent
gonna say anything that wont help me achieve what the thread is
designed to do.. call out the trolls as a test to see who passes, and
who we should all killfile.

What an amp! Wow.. this thing is THE ONE. After I change the hell out
of it, it will be. Wont be. I dont care, you are a troll and you are
trying to destroy this thread. Go ahead.. killfile me!

Thank you,
Sheep Biscuit

You know Jason.. and I hope you take this in the light it is intended
in.. i.e. completely honest, open, straight up and serious.. there are
many aspects to playing a guitar. You need a guitar and an amp. And
you also need many other things such as a guitar cord. There are just
so many variables, you know, which affect your tone; but the most
important one is you. As they say, the tone is in the fingers and..
(quickly checking notebook).. oh yeah. the fingers are in the tone. No
wait, um, the tone is in the fingers. It just means that you can't buy
a game, you know - and as much as you like the amp it will not make
you sound like Peter Frampton.

I mean maybe you should take some guitar lessons? I've heard your
stuff on the 'net dude and um, well let me put it this way - no matter
what amp you have, it's gonna sound like YOU. I hope you don't take
this the wrong way.

P.S. oops, did that look like I was calling YOU a
dickfuckheadbrain.... or me? Um... wow, did you just realize that..
like.. 2 weeks since you said it? lol

Trading out your speaker for a 2x12 cabinet will not make you sound
like Eric Clapton.

This guy once more makes himself sound like a total dickweed.
Jason, if you're listening, dig this:

1. Don't buy an amp or not because you read that "X" used it.
2. Don't decide between amps based on sound clips from two different
people using two different setups based on two different styles of
play.
3. The sound of the amp and other amps is, even more than most amps,
highly dependent on what *guitar* and *amp* is used.

I have the amp. I tried out a couple of other amps, and I can tell
you this: they are all doing a pretty decent job of emulating the old
amps. 60's amps. Peter Frampton Amps, Doors amps, they're all based
on amps, and it's a pretty simple circuit so not much to screw up
there. What separates the good ones from the ordinary is that the
"good" manufacturers use old Mullard OC-44 Ge transistors that the
original amps had *AND* they sort through them to find the ones that
are within their spec (my understanding is that there's a lot of
variability from one randomly
selected transistor to another).

[but of course, you need a *guitar* and an *amp* -ed]

Anyway, I did a lot of research and I actually talked with Peter
Frampton (who's a great guy, by the way) before I bought my amp. By
the time I did, I had a pretty good idea of what the amp did and *why*
it was so strongly dependent on the *guitar* and the *amp*, and I was
*not* disappointed in the least when I plugged into it.

What I was looking for initially was a sort of Brian May (Queen) tone,
from which I could craft my own sounds for certain songs. I like what
it does *for me*. I mainly use it with my Epi Valve Jr. head, because
it does what I want at fairly low volume. I get pretty much the same
sorts of sounds with my Vox AC30 but with that amp the volume
necessary to create those sounds is pretty much ear-splitting (at
least for home playing).

I've tried the pedal also through my Fender amps (Twin, Blues Jr.) but
it pretty much sucks (to *my* tastes). I've also run it through my
Marshall JCM800 and though it sounds pretty decent through that, it's
not the sound I'm looking for.

[thus negating everything I've said in the past, or at least making it
look like i'm a fucking bigoted hypocrite. -ed]

If you want to hear what the Java sounds like through *my* rig (in
this particular case, Brian May Red Special replica, Java, Valve Jr.),
give a listen to this:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=3D787260&songI...

Every electric guitar sound you hear on that song uses the VJ. (You
gotta wait a bit because it starts out with just an acoustic guitar.)

By the way, Clapton is *rumored* to have used the Rangemaster on the
"Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton" album recorded in 1966. He's never
confirmed it, nor has anyone else in a position to know definitively.
But he *never* used it for example on any of the Cream albums, nor on
his later albums where he's playing a Strat. So if you're looking to
"sound like Clapton", you gotta ask yourself "which Clapton?"!

Brian May used the Rangemaster on early Queen albums, but later on he
switched to a custom booster that had more mid-range boost. Guess
what, he pretty much still sounded like Brian May.

Your best bet would be to try out one of the booster pedals *in
person* with *your rig* or whatever reasonable facsimile you can find
in the store.

Clue: DON'T expect anything sounding decent if you're using any kind
of SS amp!! This pedal is specifically made to interact with tubes
(and in *my* opinion, preferably EL84s).
