According to the Gibson site, they still have mahogany necks with a
maple fingerboard on top. "Their solid mahogany necks are topped with
unbound maple fretboards, which are dressed with simple dot position
markers, and graced with a traditional trapezoid marker at the 12th
fret." Might be a typo though.
I would expect a solid maple LP to be quite heavy. I had a solid maple
Carvin DC100 years ago, and it was quite heavy even though it was a
duoble cut. My personal opinion....you won't like the feel of them,
they still will feel like a Gibson. Might sound a little brighter
though. If I were you, I'd try an LP or SG with an ebony board.
Similar sound, better feel and it still looks like a Gibson should to
me. Glad to hear you talkin' 'bout Gibsons for a change though ;-)

They also say this..."Even the neck and fingerboard are solid maple."
so I guess the first one was a mistake on their page.

Brings back memories of the L6S. I had one for a bit, and to my ears
the conclusion was that solid maple bodies and humbuckers are a really
bad match.

Gibson USA - 'Raw Power' LP and SG - maple necks! maple bodies! - Squier - 6-:17 -0-09-20

I just came across these. They are just out for 2009. Apparently
some are now arriving in stores.

Gibson just released these
as the "Raw Power" series of Gibson USA Les Pauls and SG's
with solid maple neck and solid maple body and maple top.

I am NOT a shill for Gibson (anyone around here knows I'm Fender Strat/Tele
person). But these really get my interest since I only like playing
on solid maple necks (ala Fender maple necks).

Finally Gibson comes out with maple neck guitars!
I was told that years ago they made such guitars but only for a very short time.
(I searched all over for used ones but no such luck finding them).

Well ok - I guess I'll have to scout some stores out and
give these things a try. I have always secretly wanted to
play and have a Gibson Les Paul just to have as a guitar
that can augment the sounds from my Strats and Teles.
But I never really bonded with rosewood necks, especially bound rosewood necks.

Whoo hoo. I'm excited about these new model Gibbies.
Just wanted to give people a heads up here about these.

Yes, definitely reminiscent of those! I will say this, however, I had
an 83 Carvin DC100. All maple body and neck. Ebony board. Like a
double cut LP kinda. Sounded really nice I thought, but very heavy, as
solid maple guitars tend to be depending on the thickness of the body
i guess.

The Les Paul series they did with the Silverburst, from ..79-83 or so?
had maple necks.

Peace,
Jason

Funny how different tastes are...I can't stand playing maple
fingerboards, I need rosewood. They just feel better to me. Oh well.

I like rosewood, I like maple (hardly seems like a fender without a
maple fingerboard.) hell, I once had a guitar with a synthetic
fingerboard, I think they called it Ebonite or something, I think the
different feel contributes to the unique personality of the guitar.
But in the case of the Ovation UKII, that might have been a little too
unique.

I agree mostly. I like and have rosewood, ebony and graphite. I think
proper Fenders should have maple (I know a lot of Fender players have
rosewood..in fact that's what I would have if I was a Fender guy). I
just personally don't like to play on maple. Maybe it's because most
maple boards have a coating on them...so you are not really playing on
the wood actually.
