OT: The universe is endless...PROOF! - jtees4 - 6-:17 -0-09-20

The universe is endless. I can prove it. It is simple:
1, Space is what? Nothing. The absense of everything. A vacuum.
2. You can either have Nothing or Something.
3. The only way to get to the end of nothing, is to hit something.
4. The only way to get to the end of something, is to hit nothing.
5. It is a cycle that can't end.
6. The universe goes on forever...either as something or as nothing.
I truly believe it is that simple.
Thank you.

And it all happens inside the space of your navel - in another
universe. Whoah!

Kind of falls apart right there. Space is obviously something. There is
some sort of substance to space, which is why it can be warped by gravity.
How could nothing be warped by gravity?

Chances are, your premise is flawed at #2. An ever-fine continuum
defining each state, based upon theoretical physics particles...known
and unknown.

See Higgs Bosun etc. http://tinyurl.com/H-B4u2consid

It's been my experience however, that once a person reaches a conclusion
they're comfortable with, "don't confuse me with the facts" sets in and
you're wasting your time with them.

That's the value of teaching children and knowing how, when and why to
walk away from an adult who can not be reasoned with.

ymmv.

Google "Michelson-Morley experiment".

From anti-matte to dark matter...yup. M

I thought this was going to be one of those "can God make a rock so
big that he can't lift it" things.

JTees: The concept of 'closure' of the universe was debated by the
greatest minds in physics since Einstein's day (see Einstein-de Sitter
model). The magic number that determines density, and therefore
closure, is known as Omega. Some interesting stuff during the
evolution of the theories, if you're interested:

Omega:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_fate_of_the_universe#Density_parameter
also look downward to paragraphs on "Closed universe" vs "Open
universe".

Especially interesting in that Omega determines the final fate of the
universe: eventual dissipation vs 'Big Crunch' (opposite of Big Bang).

A general search for the more technically minded:

All the M-M experiment did was to establish the constancy of the speed
of light in inertial frames of reference (in other words, there was no
"medium" or ether, through which light moves, that would established a
preferred reference frame). Of course, that led to special relativity
which in turn led to general relativity, which describes gravity.

Whether space consists of "nothing" or "something" depends on how one
defines those terms. There is nothing "material" in the sense that we
commonly understand it, but space certainly has defined properties, and
objects certainly couldn't exist without its presence. It's as real as
time (again, going back to the special theory of relativity which
describes transformations between the two).
